Default My 8 month old boxer puppy will not stop scratching!

Cezar, my 8 month old boxer puppy has been itching and scratching for the past 2 months! I have taken him to the vet and all they keep doing is giving him meds that dont work!

He has been on science diet because that is what the breeder fed him, I have recently changed his food to chicken soup for the puppy's soul. (its been about a week) I also have given him benadryl in hopes that maybe he has allergies. I thought maybe he was allergic to his food and he has been improving since on the chicken soup, however, last night I gave him a bath in the normal oatmeal hartz shampoo I use and I gave him the interceptor pill and also his flea and tick med and last night he was up all night itching and scratching, I couldnt get him to stop! He also did not eat this morning when I fed him and didnt eat much yesterday. Also, he was not itching in the place I put the flea and tick medicince, he is eating his legs and he is scratching more towards his back and butt.

I have had him tested for everything, I even had the vet do skin graphs so see if he had a fungus and it came back negative, I dont know what else to do. I feel so bad for him and I am at my wits end. someone please help!

thanks so much

Sara

So did he have a full allergy workup?
The only thing I can think of is he's allergic to something in the food?
Ollie doesn't do well with chix based food and grains. He needs simpler foods.
Hope you find out what it is.

Also with the flea/tick meds - you should wait a few days after bathing to apply.

Give the food time to set in - can take a solid two months. * Also could have reaction to the bath and the chemicals right after the bath. *Hartz shampoo may have something in it too. *I have a dog plagued with allergies. *I use only Earth Bath products and Paul Mitchel Pet. *No chemicals in the ingredients.

Id refrain from the flea/tick and maybe look into holistic measures for prevention.

perhaps he's alergic to the interceptor pill or the flea and tick med. what *flea and tick med are you giving him?
perhaps you are baithing him to much and his skin is dry and itchy. try some cider vinigar and water in a spray bottle and see if that helps.
you say it got a little better when you switched foods. perhaps try just feeding him bolied chicken and rice that you make yourself for awhile and see what effect that has.
does he have any rash or iritated skin?

also if that vets not helping much i'd get the opinion of a different one.

thanks for the replies!!!!

Yea he has scratched to the point where he is bleeding, I even keep cutting his nails and it doesnt seem to help! He is on Advantix for flea and tick. I want to get away from the vet I am with but I signed a year contract with them. In the mean time I want to take him somewhere else to get a second opinion. I'm thinking he might be allergic to grass or something of that nature, I got cezar in march 2008 and he was great until June and its been down hill ever since where he has been outside alot, HE LOVES to be outside! He will roll around in the grass. I just feel so bad for him...my poor guy.

Sara

PS. I am working on getting a pic up it says that all mine are bigger then 25kb so I will keep trying.

yep. all pics have to be 100x100pixels (for avatars) and no more than 256 kb. (for posts) if you have a program that will resize them (i use MS paint). its pretty easy to do.

is that year contract thing something new? i've never heard of such a thing and would never agree to one.

I hope you find out what it is... poor lil pup... it's hard when you're helpless. Alot of the times I have heard of this from dog owners in the neighborhood, it's usually been some form of allergies.

On a side note, I've never heard of signing a contract with a vet *

P.S. If you have microsoft picture manager, go to the Picture drop down menu, compress files, click on web page. If not, you could use a site like photobucket.

Sadie has issues with her muzzle area and her feet. *I'm pretty sure she's allergic to the grass. *She'll scratch more and more when she needs a bath. *I came home today at lunch to find the size of her muzzle bloody. *I've been meaning to give her a bath for a few days, got to tonight! *Also, clean there dish daily and that might help cut back on issues with there face. *Good luck!
