Default Confused- Can rice CAUSE constipation??

HELP!! *Poor Porter has been through the wringer these last few days. *In an effort to harden his consistently looser poo, I tried adding some rice to his kibble. *Within 12 hours, he was acting constipated. *He'd go out to do his business only to have a few squirts of diarehha (sorry for the visual) followed by running around the yard and trying to poop again a few times. *We were up every couple hours last night because he was wanting to go outside... no poo any of the times. *

I called the ER vet who recommended boiled hamburger and rice. *But when I research it online, it looks like rice can cause constipation in dogs!! *I don't know what to do!!! *

Porter is almost 11 months old. *We have tried pumpkin. *He is otherwise in good spirits, playing, wanting to eat, drinking, etc. *He's had "looser" than normal stools since we got him at 6 months. *He's had several fecal exams, been de-wormed, treated for chlostridium. *

It's so hard watching my baby be uncomfortable!! *We have a vet appt for 5:30 tonight if it doesn't get better with the hamburger and rice.

What kibble are you feeding? *It can be a long search, but you should be able to find one that agrees with him.

Rice will help firm them up and yes too much could definitely bind them up too much.....how much rice are you giving? *You really only need to add a little. *I would use brown rice also, it's a better quality fibre.

All you can do is keep trying to new foods until one works for him. *Kirkland doesn't look like a terrible food, but it's all chicken protein so maybe try a different protein source. * I would probably try a fish based food first, but theres also stuff like lamb, buffalo, venison, etc

Definitely try a different food if you've been on the Kirkland for 5 months with no improvement. *It can take several months for a dog to transition form one food to the next so it's not something you want to do often. *He's also getting to the age where an All Life Stages food or an adult food might be options. *I think a lot of folks on here have had to try several foods to find one that works.

You can check this sticky on the topic.

We went to a grainless kibble and have had a lot of success.

lol! i know how you feel! i had all the same questions..what i ended up doing was asking for a recommendation from people who do feed raw.. also lucky for me my vet is way into natural remedies and feeding raw diets.. i settled on *a brand of pre made (i use natures variety) and a grainless kibble evo innova is nice also orejen is good too.(IMO) i found a pet store that carried the brand and purchased on bag of medallions. those are *individual 1 oz pieces.. i went with the venison because it is lower allergen than the beef or chicken.. i took 2 medallions out and let them defrost in the fridge.. gave them for dinner.. i waited for 2 poops they were both fine.. gave 3 for breakfast poops were great and already smaller and firmer.. i kept increasing the amount i gave until she was at the recommended amount.. so she had one meal of just grainless kibble and one meal of raw... i have actually gone full raw because i love it so much.. but that is just me.. i hope this helps you out!!

Only problem is if he's allergic to chicken, it will make raw very difficult (and expensive). *I would first try to find out what is really not agreeing with him so you can at least figure out all your options. *Me personally I would feed him boiled lean beef and a little bit of brown rice for a few days and see if it agrees with him. *Then at least you can feel easy it's not a medical issue, it's a food issue. This is not something you can feed on a longterm basis but it may ease your mind and then let you start trying new options. *Just my opinion
