Default Why would my dogs teeth have been filed down/cut?

As I have posted before I got my dog from a rescue when he was roughly 1 year old, I have never really checked his teeth properly before as he works himself up into a frenzy when i try, but I have noticed that one of his canines looked flattened, today I perserviered in checking his teeth and have noticed that in fact all 4 of his canines are flattened and look to be about half to 3/4 the size I would expect them to be. Have any of you seen this before? and why would this be done?

Im also 99% sure this is not 'wear and tear' or natural as they are all perfectly level and all the same height and couldnt imagine teeth wearing down to this size.

I have done a quick google search on it and have read that some people file the teeth down on dogs that bite? but ive had him over a year now and he hasnt got a bite in him so I am very confused as to why this has been done?

I tried to take a picture to show you but he wouldnt stay still and the best I could get was a blurry pic that doesnt show anything!

Don't know if it's the same but we had a dog Roscoe once that was obsessed with rocks. For some odd reason they were his favorite chew EVER As he aged I noticed that all 4 canine teeth were worn and were perfectly even. My brothers Lab, Mike was the same way.Since you don't know your pups prior history it's hard to say what he might have had to chew as a pup????
As far as filing teeth, I've never heard of that but people are crazy and might do anything??? Could explain his reluctance to let you look at them tho. If they don't hurt him it shouldn't be a problem and since he has shown no aggression I'd just ask the vet next time you're in.

Thanks for the reply, Yes im going to ask the vet about it next time we go, it just seems alot of wear if it has happened as he has been chewing, hes only just turned 2 and I have had him for a year and he hasnt chewed anything abrasive whilst I have had him, so that would mean he did some serious damage to his teeth in his first year, just seems very odd to me.

I have heard of people delibrately doing that to a dog, soo cruel..It could have been done delibrately or like Lori said, he had a rock fetish, but if that's the case you would think you would still be seeing him eating rocks...Poor guy

It could be a couple things one he could be older than what the rescue thought unless you got him as a pup...A lot times they guess age bc they don't know enough history...Second he could of done this to himself by chewing something like a crate or a chain....I have seen dogs in puppy mill situations that constantly chewed on their crate and their teeth were filled bc of it.

We had a german shepherd whose canines were flattened on the top, although they were quite long, didn't look short. We got him at 3 mos and had his baby teeth and he didn't chew on stuff. They just came in that way - they never bothered him. I don't know if that is something common to shepherds or if it is just an occasional thing.

Cassius has a similar thing, I think it is 3 of his canines that are flattened now. I suspect that they've been chipped from chewing and ripping his jolly ball but I am not sure on that. I know that tennis balls are notoriously bad for the teeth. The felt on them acts like sand paper and continuous chewing can cause this type of damage (this is why Kong makes special AirDog toys that are similar to tennis balls but dog teeth friendly). Our trainer had a lab who had this happen, generally that happens over time. I'm not 100% sure what happened with Cassius since he doesn't chew his crate (at least not that we've seen or seen evidence of), we have wood fencing that he doesn't chew, the only thing he'd go nuts with was his jolly ball. My other theory is that the jolly ball was always so covered in dirt and sand that got trapped in the scratches and punctures on the ball and created a big sandpaper ball that wore his teeth down. In any case he's not allowed to get jolly unless we are with him to make sure he doesn't treat it like a chew toy. Like the others said, our vet checked them out and said as long as it doesn't get worse there's nothing really horribly wrong and nothing to really do about it.

Oh and Cassius was a rescue we got at 8 months and I can honestly say I am not sure if this all happened before or after we got him.

I have also heard stories of "bait" dogs having nails clipped short and teeth filed for "training". DISGUSTING!

Oggie has at least one flattened canine too. I got him as a pup, he's never had any trauma to the mouth or anything. When he was very young he would chew on the crate, so I guess that could have done it. I stopped crating him pretty soon after that though. Interesting to note that while he doesn't really play with tennis balls, he has had a jolly ball for quite a while. I hope thats no the cause because he loved that thing, although since I got a second dog he rarely plays with it.

When we picked Nikita up from the breeder @8wks old, she mentioned to us that she filed down Nikita's teeth a bit because we have kids...i found that a bit odd
