Default Question about Prednisone

Girl was getting 2 10mg pills of pred. everyday. I gave her one in the morning and one at night. Yesterday they tell us that it is time to start backing her down. I thought that we would go to one pill a day. They said no, every other day. So one day with normal pills and then one day with none. Does that sound right? I am freaking out about it. I am questioning if that is right, because it just doesn't sound right. The prednisone is what fixed her platelet count. I am worried about cutting her back to fast.

I would call them and double check on it if you aren't feeling that is right.

Isis spent 2 years on and off Pred...and i HATED it..made her never have control of her bladder poor thing was aweful ! but what they would do is.. cut her back to 1/2's on the same dosage schedule..then after a few days go to every other day... i know it can really have a terrible effect coming off as Isis has gone through the withdrawels...and its TERRIBLE...the shaking, the whining, the drop in temp... its unavoidable but id ask...if i were you...make sure that pulling her back that fast off that dose is ok..thats kinda fast..

When Zoie the BT was on it for an allergic reaction and hives this was our schedule....
3/4 pill every day for 5 days
1/2 pill every day for 5 days
1/2 every other day for 7 days

She is a small dog so her dosage is a lot less but same idea.

Hello! I do think that it's better to go slow.
Give her 1 pill (10mg) for 2 days, then 3/4 pill for 2 days, then 1/2 pill for 2 days.
You can tape it even more slow if you like. The idea is to tape it not to stop it suddely. Why? Here is the reason. Prednisone is corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are made by our bodies and animals as well in adrenal glands normally. When we give somebody prednisone then we suppress our own production of these hormones. We give prednisone because we need higher dose than our bodies can make. Prednisone is mostly helpfull in inflammation processes, it is defence for us/animals. So when somebody is on prednisone/steroids he/she is not making her own seroids. If she/he would stop taking these suddenly then his/her body would not have any steroids and it can became emergency and life threating situation. When we tape (lower the dose for a while) our body start making its own steroids little by little, more with each day...
I hope this will help.

Pred is a very dangerous drug. I have been on it myself many times over the yrs. for Crohn's Disease. Do exactly as directed. Taper very slowly. Just to stop it could have dire consequences with your adrenaline glands.

My Cookie who died of lymphoma cancer was on it over the holidays and she was actually hilarious. It increases your appetite and she could have eaten the house down. She was under the table at Thanksgiving and I happen to drop my hand down and she almost ate it off!

It was great to see her feeling so well. She was acting like a puppy but it didn't last long. It just covered up her symptoms for awhile.

I'd check with the vet. I did have a very good Internist that went to every other day when we used pred briefly for IBD. I don't know the logic there, maybe it involves which disease, and how long it stays in the body. With the Sterile Meningitis it's a different story. We half the dose every two weeks and are down to 5 mg a day. I guestioned the dangers of pred with the neurologist, and he said the Boxers he's treated (heavy dose) for a couple months have all done well with no resulting problems. The thing is to find somebody that knows what they're really doing.

Yea, I'd check with the vet..The couple times Flick was on it, our dosages were half what Girl is getting, so we did the every other day, but my thought is I would cut back to once a day first for like a week, then go to every other day
