Exclamation Interceptor dewormer

Hi folks,
I just got an email from my breeder and thought I'd pass her reminder onto you all. We all know that Ace is bad for boxers, but you don't hear as much about Interceptor. Interceptor is used to prevent heartworm, but can be deadly to boxers. A puppy from Hobbes' litter was given interceptor even though the owner mentioned that our breeder included a clause in our contracts that states not to give Interceptor or Ace. The vet insisted that there aren't any conclusive studies about Interceptor, and that the pup would be fine; he got incredibly ill and may have long term or permanent damage. Many boxer puppies have been lost over the last few years because of Interceptor, please don't let this happen to your dog... it's so easy to prevent. If your vets are unaware, make them aware, tell other boxer owners as well. That's what I'm trying to do. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the post. Do you have any web links about this? I have been using Interceptor since at least the 1980s and on 4 different Boxers without a problem. Shiro has had two so far. I wonder if possibly they have changed the preservatives or something.

A kennel in the Houston area has posted warning Boxer owners not to use Comfortis saying it killed one of her dogs and made the others sick. Down here in Texas fleas are horrible and I started using Comfortis this past summer when all my favorite products failed. I have not had a problem with the product.

I also use Interceptor and have not noticed any ill effects. More info?

Is it a dewormer or a preventative? (Sorry, I've never heard of it.)

Laila has been on Interceptor for at least a year now. Thanks for the warning Emily. I'd also like to see the studies that support this. That poor puppy...how awful.

Interceptor kills the heartworm microfilariae (larvae) in the blood stream, but not the actual worms in the heart. It also kills roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. Heartgard does the same.

Dogs infected with heartworms can be cured by taking Interceptor or Heartgard as the larvae are killed and eventually the adult heartworms die of old age. Vets disagree as to how long it takes for the adult worms to die, but they will die. Some say 6 months. Some say up to 2 years.

From my breeder's email, it sounds as though there aren't any conclusive studies that she knows of; however, she personally knows a number of dogs who have gotten sick from it. She's been a respected breeder for a number of years and is in close contact with many other breeders, so I'm assuming her personal experience is worth at least taking the warning seriously. I'm not 100% sure, I was just passing on some information. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and use a different dewormer for Hobbes.

Thanks for the information. I also read along these posts the COMFORTIS could be a problem ! ! Yikes, anyone have more information on this. We also had a flee problem this past spring (and all our animals are treated regularly) so we switched from Frontline Plus to the Comfortis, that change with alot of spraying our home got rid of them.

I have had Morgan on Interceptor sence she has been able to take heartr worm meds. I trust my vet and any decision that they make. I will have to do some research on this now just to make sure that Morgan will be ok. Thanks for the warning.
