Question Bleeding Under the Nails?

I just noticed last night that Pumkin has red underneath her nail beds near to the skin. It looks like it has bled. I have never seen this in a dog but also never had dog with white nails.

Her nails have been clipped within the last month so they aren't really that long.

I am wondering if it is because she really plays pounce wih her ball - she gets it in the bottom of her crate and really ponces hard and pounces on the tile floor a lot. Does anyone think this could cause the bleeding? Has anyone experienced this in their Boxer? She is not limping or acting like she is any pain at all. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Mongo has that every once in a while.
I think it's just from playing too hard, he must injure them or catch them on something the wrong way. When I see it, I know it's time for a trim.

All of ours have that. I've often wondered the same thing.

I posted a while back about Gracie having this. I also thought it was from the pouncing and running hard. It may actually be a yeast issue from what I was told on the forum. What's interesting is that when she was on Flagyl, her nail were clear and white. So there is merit to the yeast "theory". Some of her nails are dark at the base once again but I give her frozen yogurt in her kong for snacks and have added probiotics in her diet just for good measure. Her nails are still dark but they don't seem to bother her. Hope that helps.

Here is a link to the thread:

It's just an overgrowth of yeast! Most dogs aren't bothered by it in the least...all my dogs have it every so often...as long as theyre not licking or chewing at their feet, it's not a big deal. If they start licking or chewing at their feet, they may need to go see the vet for some antifungals, but just make sure they're doing alright and I wouldn't worry. It's not blood though!

Are you sure it's IN the nail? Rockys nails appeared to have blood in them as well.. But it was actually on the outside only...

His looked like the one on the left.. but got worse over time..

I took the pedi paws to the outside of them and it took off the discoloration that was sitting on the surface... they are clear again.

Yep, Rocky's looked the exact same way... I think it's yeast.. I took the cover off the pedi paws nail grinder and slightly went over them... It came right off I bet sand paper or a nail file would take it off too.. His nails look so much better now. I should have taken a before and after photo...

His nails are still dark at the beds... I am actually getting ready to soak his feet in some selson blue or medicated antifungal shampoo. We are going to try soaks and see if we can get it cleared up since the apple cider vinegar didn't seem to do the trick.

Thanks everyone! I feel much better now and will keep an eye on them and try to file it if she'll hold still for me. The pictures pretty much look exactly like Pumpkins nails. And no I am not sure it is in the nails.

Hi! So Duke has the same thing and I just read these posts and tried filing his nails and it came off! But, I noticed the other day that there was a blood trail from the back door. It's happened a couple times since then, mostly on the same paw and I've tried to get close to look at it and it is definitely blood and I'm almost 100% sure it's coming from the nail. We live in MA and this has only happend in the cold/snow. Any ideas?
