Default cheapest way to go about flea/tick/heartworm prevention...

Since we've had Deacon, we've had him on revolution monthly and I've been very happy with the results... never seen a flea or tick on him and the medicine doesn't bother him. Doing it monthly though, is going to add up and I was just wondering what you guys do for prevention. Also, during the winter months, from about Oct. till March, I've heard some people say flea/tick medicine is pointless, then I've heard others (including my vet) say it is still necessary. Honestly, during the winter months I will probably rarely go anywhere with Deacon other than just here around our house for walks and our yard to play. We have no local dog parks or anything like that, so I really think I would be okay to forget the flea/tick prevention during the winter, but I still need something for heartworms. If Deacon were to somehow pick up fleas, I could just buy a thing of revolution or a shampoo and treat him...no biggie. But if plain heartworm prevention is going to cost as much as revolution, I might as well stick with what I've been doing.... Just wondering what you guys think about it or if you have any advice about a cheaper way to go about prevention?

I don't give Aspen anything because we don't have heartworm or fleas where I live, and as you said, there are ways to easily treat ticks and lice. I am interested to hear suggestions though in case we are to travel somewhere that has heartworm, as I really don't want to use Revolution (ie. pesticide) on her.

I used to go the whole nine yards too. I quit because alot of what the vets sell you is not really necessary unless you have a problem. I have never seen a flea or tick on my girl. Of course, we walk our neighborhood/local. And I am always wary of the neighborhood dogs if I don't know the owners... If we walked/hiked in the wooods alot, I would get the treatments, however.

Even the thought of not using heartworm/flea preventative year round for me sounds strange. But my area is pretty much one of the most heavily populated areas for both problems. But most times even revolution, advantage multi, and frontline do no good. I Have heard of people using products such as Springtime, Inc. | Bug Off Garlic for Dogs | Natural Flea and Tick Repellent this pretty effectively but I have no experience to attest to that.

We use Triflexis, it is a combination of flea and heartworm control. We haven't ever had a flea but don't want that battle We live in a popular area for heartworm and I had a Lab once that caught it and don't ever want one of my babies to go through that misery again. Here it runs around 18$ per tablet per month which to me isn't at all bad considering some cost that for just the flea or hw control and not both together. The vet here gives you a price break if you are buying 6mos supply.

How is the triflexis on tummys? Bosley seems to react everytime I give him his Sentinel... either he has the runs or he pukes....and then he's off for a whole day (does the whole licking his lips and just generally not himself) I only ask because the sentinel is essentially the same thing, flea, tick, heartworm all in one pill. I don't even want to give it to him for this month becuuse he is miserable afterwards.

Yes they are very expensive. You might try the generic Iverhart which is what our Rescue treats the dogs with. Thats for heartworm. I use comfortis and and it is all I will ever use. We live in Texas there is no such thing as a month without mosquitos and fleas. LOL

What are your all's opinion on not treating for fleas and ticks through the winter unless it becomes necessary? Although I don't think heartworm would be problem in the winter here either, I just don't want to take any chances on that. Do you think giving heartguard only through the winter months would be okay unless he were to come down with fleas? I think the vet is just doing their job and making money by telling me I should use revolution year-round... it doesn't really seem necessary to me.
