So 1 year ago Zay had a tiny black lump that turned out to be a cancerous mast cell tumor. I had all 3 at the vet today for their annual checkup, and the vet wants her back to have a small flat pink spot removed. Just wanted to give a heads up that bad tumors can come in all shapes and sizes :-(

Maggie was supposed to have her lump removed a week and a half ago but "Sandy" knocked out everyone's power. We just got our power back 2 days ago (after 12 days). Now she is rescheduled for surgery on November 30th. It was the earliest appointment they had.

Do you do the tagamet and benadryl a couple times a year to help prevent more mast cells?

Hi Lynne! She goes in for surgery tomorrow. I am so worried. I've done Benadryl in the spring/summer, haven't done Tagamet? This is something I need to pursue

Ro had a lump too. His was on the top of his neck, and had a white head on it. It was also aspirated, but vet saw nothing wrong in it. Hoss didn't have any lumps or bumps, thankfully.

Mast cells thrive on histamine, and Benadryl and Tagamet help. One is a H1 blocker and one is an H2 blocker (can't remember which is which-sorry) So the combination has been shown to shrink mast cell tumors. Here is some good info:

Maggie had an aspiration which turned out "inconclusive" so rather than trying another aspiration that could also turn out inconclusive, we are having it removed and sent out for biopsy. They did find spindle cells, but they said spindle cells can be either malignant or benign.
