Moxie is a little over 6 months now. I'm wondering when is a good age to get her spayed? (Not spaying is not an option-so please don't suggest that). I've never had a puppy spayed so I'm not sure what age is appropriate. My rotty was an adult shelter dog when we got her and was spayed then and my husky mix was already spayed when we rescued her. (Family dogs so I refer to them as mine)
I realize everyone has different ideas and I've read a lot of literature about the pros and cons of spaying before the first heat or waiting until after. But I'm looking for advice on what YOU did and why? Also- on average what age to boxers have their first cycle? I have to wait until after the new year to have her spayed so maybe my question will already be answered. Lol

This is an interesting thread for me. When I had Gouda and before I knew much I spayed her at about 6 months I believe. As far as health issues etc that could be caused by an "early" spay I dont know if that contributed at all.
Now Kippah was a rescue and about 1.5-2 years when I got her. She already had at least one litter and was spayed before she was delivered to me. Only time will tell if things are different for her than they were for Gouda.

Mya got spayed at 1 year. It also happened to be the same time that she was one her first heat.
I too researched the timeline and I went with the thought that 1 year will be a good time in terms of her being more mature etc. |

Maggie was spayed at 5.5 months old.
Of course I wasn't a member of this forum yet, so I didn't know there were risks / benefits to waiting. I just did what the "vets" said. Had I known then what I know now, I would have waited until after she went through a heat cycle. Maggie developed adult onset vaginitis. Upon exam by a vet, I was told it is because she has a recessed vulva. On researching "recessed vulva" I found information that a recessed vulva normally corrects itself after going through a heat cycle. So being that you have researched the benefits and risks of when to spay, my only advice would be to have her examined for a recessed vulva if you intend to get her spayed before she goes through a heat cycle. |

We had Lucy spayed at six months and Holly was spayed at almost nine months(before going into heat). All of my family's dogs have been spayed or neutered around six months and none of them ever had any health problems resulting from an "early" spay/neuter, they all lived long healthy lives.
