Default Just returned from the vet - somewhat good news

I took Gabby in for a checkup this morning on her lumps and bumps - including a new one on her leg. We couldn't find any of the bumps she had before starting Prednisone and Tagamet, and the vet did not see any active cells in the new one that he aspirated. So it's most likely not a MCT. Yay! The bump does bother her, so I want it removed. We are going to wean her off the prednisone over the next couple weeks to see if any of the previous bumps reappear and he will remove them as well. She will also get a couple small melanomas removed. When he saw her today he was like "poor girl. You're just a growth factory aren't you?"

She has also gained a lot of weight and I'm practically starving her. She's up to 99.9lbs eating 2 cups a day. No table scraps. Only one little BB grain free turkey biscuit treat per day. Granted I question whether she is really purebred - maybe some mastiff or something in her, she used to be 70lbs... I still love my big girl with all my heart though! <3

I also still really want to start home cooking for her (and myself for that matter), but I have put it on the back burner for a bit until I can really take the time to sit down and plan it out so I give her all the necessary nutrients. Until then, she is on BB wilderness grain free duck and starting coconut oil when I get some today.

Good news on the bumps. Wow, she's a big girl. Being on the prednisone, did that cause her to put on some weight?? I know when Maggie was on it, she gained weight which was good cause she was losing weight quickly.

Gabby has been a big girl since her first round of tumors. They put her on Palladia and she got up to 130lbs! She was not herself - or like any dog for that matter. She seemed depressed, only wanted to sleep. I would literally have to drag her off the couch to get her to go outside. Before she recently started the prednisone, I managed to get her down to 84lbs.

I know the prednisone is keeping the tumors from metastasizing, so it will help her live longer, but that much extra weight is just going to cause other problems to shorten her life right? Quite a conundrum.

Steroids will cause weight gain. You may need to go to a weight control formula because you will keep cutting her down to nothing. Poor baby. Good news on the growths however. Yeah!!

Good news for Gabby! Glad to hear it! Prednisone is notorius for causing weight gain, animals and humans...

That is some good news. Yes prednisone will cause weight gain but when you are in that position, as you are with her(Ive been there), you have to weigh the pros and cons and look at the reality of her quality of life for her remaining time. I agree trying to wean her off prednisone. Its one of those drugs if things start to go downhill it works really fast usually within 24-48 hours.

Keep us posted on her and yes shes a big one for sure

Glad for the good news! You could try Wellness Core Low Fat. It has good protein content (and grain free), but lower in fat/calories. I got my MIL's cockapoo to lose 1/2 her body weight while on this kibble. Just remember to feed the amount for what the dog should weigh, not for what it weighs now.

Continued healing thoughts heading your way!!
