Hello everyone. I have a 5 month old puppy who I bought from a breeder. When purchased, the vet records indicated no record of a heart murmur. When I brought him to the vet at 14 weeks, he detected a grade 1 murmur and it was still there when I took him back at 18 weeks. Vet recommended me taking him to a cardiologist before we get him neutered... any ideas on how expensive that is or if it is necessary? Or would it be safe to just get him neutered anyways? He shows no sign of a heart murmur (collapsing, fainting)... he runs around all day long with me and my horses and sleeps normally just at night. I read up that 95% of boxers with heart murmurs aren't problematic but I'm worried if we get him neutered and they put him under he won't wake up... any suggestions?

My cocker had a heart murmur as a pup too. It stayed with her but never caused serious problems. She would breathe heavy and couldn't keep up with my other dogs but she still lived a happy life. She was spayed ok as a pup and never had to be put under after that. If you are concerned I would see another vet or discuss with your vet your concerns and see if it is necessary or a precaution. Hopefully it doesn't develop passed the grade 1

Grade 1-2 murmurs are usually nothing to worry about. To see a cardiologist and have an echo done you are looking at about $400-500.

I would hold off on his neuter until at least 12 mths of age and have a different vet listen to it then.
