I have an 8 year old white boxer and she has been going down hill for about a little over a month. She has lost the muscle mass in her back legs and has lost a lot of control in them as well she walks knuckled over on her back right foot. We can not keep her out of the water bowl she will drink it in a matter of minutes and then get sick its like she can not ever get enough. We have her on a weight loss/management food and she just keeps getting a larger belly its like she is bloating. I am taking her to get a blood panel done to see if it could be diabetes but i might also get a cushing's test done as well. Has anyone else had a similar problem, if so what came of the situation?

I have not gone through this. I wanted to say I am very sorry that you are going through this - it is scary and stressful. You can be sure that other members will chime in with their experiences and thoughts. I have read about situations like this and the thing that stands out is that it may be some sort of cancer. Do your research, get the appropriate tests and try to formulate a plan of action. Let us know what the vet says.
BTW - Welcome to the forums. My name is Deb and I have a 3 year-old boy named Rocco. What is your girl's name? |

I also don't know too much about it. My pug cross had a seizure and the emergency vet tested her for it but she was fine. Both can be treated with meds although I think I remember reading it is expensive. I hope she will be ok and it turns out to be something less serious

Welcome from NJ
Sounds like your girl may have several different issues going on. The back leg and knuckling sounds like it may be DM (degenerative myelopathy). The excessive thirst could be several different things. The larger belly is very worrisome. Glad you are taking her to the vet for some tests. Please keep us posted on what the vet says. |

I am so sorry that you are going through this. My Maggie (boxer mix) had excessive thirst caused by what we found out was a UTI but her stomach also swelled up. We discovered with her that she had lymphoma (she was 12.5 & would of been 13 the around the 14th of Jan). I wish you the best with your pup.

I agree with Lynne. The loss of control in the back end and the knuckling of the foot suggests DM. The bloated belly and excessive thirst leads me towards the kidneys not functioning properly or even cancer.
There was a thread on here a couple years ago with the same symptoms. Excessive Thirst, Urination, and Abdominal Swelling

Thank you all for the reply. I believed that she has DM as well but then i did a little research on Cushing''s and it said it could make them walk a bit awkwardly with the knuckling over of the back legs so that had me worried. Vet was booked today but i will try for tomorrow. Her name is Gypsy and she is such a doll we even got her a wheel chair to help her get around better.
