A few days before Christmas, Dec 20, 2012 to be exact. Marquee and I were outside. He was running around playing like always. When it was time to come inside he came limping. This had never happened before and i thought maybe he pulled his leg because it was a bit muddy, maybe he slipped and pulled it. The next i took him to the vet, they took xrays and said they didnt see any broke bones or anything. The vet told me it could be a sprain and since he was able to sometimes put a bit of weight on it and stand on it, it may not be too bad. They sent him on antibiotics (anti inflamatory and pain medication), no running around and he had to be take out with his leash. A few days passed and he was now putting weight on it and limping less and less. But now again he runs around or plays rough and crazy jumping and begins to limp again. Anybody know what it could be?? I will be taking him to the vet again but first i want to get an idea maybe if this has happened to anybody else?

Its an ACL tear, sounds partial as he starts to get better with rest. A partial tear doesnt always require surgery. You can look into physiotherapy such as water treadmill and at home exercises to help build the muscle in the leg to better support the joint. Usually 8-10 weeks of strict rest, no off leash, no running, no jumping, no stairs is enough to help heal the leg. If you are not careful a partial tear can become a complete tear and surgery will be required.
One of my guys did the same thing at the end of Nov. She just had surgery last week to repair the leg. Its at least a 12 weeks recovery.

Thank You! I will deff start working on it and ask the vet to give me some exercises before jumping into a surgery. When we lays on that side I feel/seems as if it were swollen right by his knee (inside). I hope your buddy is getting much better!
Thank You!!! |

Is it his ankle or knee? Rocky rolled his ankle and it was really swollen so I kept him in his crate more often than usual for a few days and the swelling went down. Back to normal...
