Default An almost new years disaster {HELP}

I don't know how many times I have posted about this on other forums, but it is an on going problem and this is the worst it's ever been. Most of you guys know my girl Abby. If not she is my 5 year old adopted lab mix. Well she has an issue with bad storms and loud noises and she gets really bad. Well tonight is new years and just a while ago our neighbors down the street were setting off their fireworks. Abby has never gotten this bad and quite frankly it could have led to a heart attack. She has never ever been this bad and it scared us all.

She just flipped out and went onto my parents bed and started shaking real bad and panting really hard. I had to carry her out of the room because she couldn't walk. I ran her into the quietest room which would be mine and it's the room she feels most comfortable in. After about half an hour she calmed down a bit, but was still panting and shaking, but she could stand and walk. I took a video of that and it's uploading now, but photo bucket takes forever.

Anyway the only reason I'm on the computer right now is because she's stable enough in my room and is drinking some water and stopped shaking. This has gotten out of hand. As soon as I can I'm taking her into the vet or I will call them possibly tomorrow if I can, but I must go. only two hours till midnight and the fact that she got this bad with only a couple going off I'm worried about later tonight when everyone starts shooting them off.

Any advice on how to keep her clam and what not is welcome

Our Schnauzer used to be very similar, we found (if we could predict thunder or fireworks) playing some sort of background white noise helped. I also would give her a doggie sedative on the 4th of july and during bad thunderstorms. I would also try running a sound machine that has thunder on it or a tape recording of fireworks at other times during the year to help desenitize her. Mostly just being with her and talking calmly to her as you did is the trick. Good Luck, I know how painful it is to see her upset and scared.

you don't have any anti-anxiety medication for her? The vet gave me something for bella before she made her first 5 hour car ride to calm her down and it worked wonders. I just have no clue what it was. I would talk to a vet and look into something like this.

edit..also I know it is probably to late..but what about playing some music off of your computer to drown out the sound of the fireworks? Maybe just gradually turn up the volume so it isn't just instantly full blast? Not sure what all sets her off. Bella used to freak out when we left her alone in the garage, now I just turn the radio on and she is fine. seems to calm them haha.

Never had that happen but I think a anxiety med could be a start. I took Buckles to a parade in May and she freaked out by all the drums, horns, etc. We had to leave she was a mess. That was the only time she got so upset w/loud sounds.

They're so cute, i live next to a quarry and Nikki is scared to death when they blast, she starts shaking 15 min before they even blast, it's amazing as i don't know how she can tell they are about to blast but she knows, she continues shaking for about a half hour after they blast too, i have noticed that the more i make a fuss over her or try to comfort her the worse she is, if i act as if nothing has happened she gets over it quicker, funny thing, my other 4 boxers are not bothered by the blasting at all, Happy New Year.

yeah..every thing I have read/watched said That if you tell them it's ok and pet them they think they are getting praise for being scared and it makes thing much worse to fix in the long run. Just have to ignore them when it happens and act like you don't even hear it.

well the rest of the night wasn't bad. She even came outside when they were blasting them off though quickly decided enough was enough and went back to hide in my room. Eventually she stopped her shaking and came to lay and fell asleep with me on the bed. Now is back to her normal self. So we took the dogs out to the lake and let them have a good time (I have pics but there uploading)
