Hi,
We love our boxer dog Romeo and we have received alot of great advice when we needed it, thank you. My partner and I have 5 dogs who are all equally loved and cared for. Aside from Romeo, we have Zoey (Jack Russell), Diago (Hunt terrier), Apollo (Maremma Sheepdog) and Saka (Great Pyranees). Currently Apollo and Saka serve a dual purpose because they live fulltime with our goats on our farm as livestock guardians. They are not excluded and they get our daily attention just as our house dogs do. They have all enriched our lives with unconditional love and we are very blessed to have them. Here is our problem............ Today we took Saka to our vet because she wasn't acting right, her pupils were dilated, she was breathing heavy which was very concerning....we know when our babies arent acting like themselves. Also she didn't eat her food and seemed to be losing weight. Vet didn't find anything wrong upon physical examination, checked her heart which sounded good but was concerned about her heavy breathing as well... He stated it can be a sign of pain but that Pyr's also suffer from Cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure, both possibilities. Only an appt with a cardiologist would help determine this. He drew blood and gave her a shot of antibiotics in case of infection and sent her home with oral antibiotics for 10 days. Once he had the blood results he would call us immediately. WELL......results show that she is in RENAL FAILURE. Both her protein and phosphorus levels are off the charts..... What??? I was not expecting that....She now has to be on a strict diet change and hopefully it will slow down the progression of the disease.... I have cried my eyes out all afternoon....We are beside ourselves and feel helpless because we know our baby will leave us too soon but who knows when. She is only 5 yrs old. We are asking for prayers to help our beloved girl. Also any advice and shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks |

Oh. This is terrible news. Simply dreadful. 5 is too young!
I am so very sorry for your entire pack. They must all be worried. I am sending well wishes and prayers that she is not in pain. Spend these precious moments with her.

There is lots of info online for dogs with renal failure and management. I wish you all the best. Out of curiosity what are you doing as far as diet? Did you just switch kibbles?

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support! Saka passed away this morning inside our home with my partner and I surrounding her as she crossed over the bridge. She did not die alone and passed away in my arms..... As difficult as this is, I am conforted by the fact that she passed away peacefully(in our home) and is no longer suffering. I just couldn't bring myself to have her put to sleep. I knew the time would come sooner than later and am thankful that she made the decision for us..... She would not eat anything and believe me we tried everything... I believe she was content to having our full attention those last hours we had with her and thats all she wanted and then was ready....Tail still wagging til the end....Please pray for my partner and I as we mourn the loss of our great friend and protector of our goats. There will be a huge void here and nothing will be able to replace her. As I look back, it was in 2009 when my partner and I rescued Saka from the Northeast Pyr Rescue organization and am so thankful that we were chosen to be her forever family. We are so grateful that words cannot express...... RIP my sweet girl, you have gone too soon.........
