Not so cute SCREAMING Cooper :(

Coopy has been with us almost 3 weeks.

I have NEVER had such a hard time training THE CRATE!

At night, NO PROBLEM at all.
During the day when I work, NO PROBLEM AT ALL.
During training, NO PROBLEM AT ALL.

After meals :crazyeye:AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My ears can't take it anymore. We all literally put ear plugs as he SCREEAAMMS his head off and at some point I think the crate is going to fall over to it'S side.

I have NEVER ever had such a hard time with the crate.
This is after the meal routine: take him out to pee, make sure he drank water, make him go in his crate (which he does) reward and SCREAM,SCREAM,SCREAM yesterday for over an hour. I NEVER give attention when he screams. He never gets to get out until he is calm and quiet and I mean calm, laying down calm.

This is what I think:

AT night and during the day I don't have any problems because My Bernese is ALSO crated.
I put him in his crate after meals so they stay calm to digest. But my Bernese is not crated at that time and I think little Cooper wants to be a big boy too and have the right to not be crated. But after meals little Cooper is a real RE ENERGIZED bouncy boy and I want him to relax after meals so he and his sister don't get bloated. And anyways this little one doesn't like MY RULES, but this little one will have to get used to MY rules.

HOW LONG WILL HE CONTINUE THROWING THESE FULL BLOWN FITS:cry_baby:
It's been almost 3 weeks now and his screams are VERY VERY high pitch and hurt our now very fragile little ears

How long has this been going on??? Hmm, not three weeks I would hope??? If it has been three weeks?? The phrase that comes to mind is "Correct the Puppy" in the Crate for acting like a tool.

You could try "feeding him in the Crate first , that might make a difference??? I don't recall anyone mentioning this as a Crate issue lately because it's not entirely about the Crate.

For the past 2 weeks:(
Never used the crate as punishment!
Have fed him in the crate too and we've been practicing going in crate and sometimes he goes in and out of it from his own free will so I know he is not scared of it.
Tonight wasn't so bad after meal but he just came back from vet and had vaccines.

Correcting the puppy for not acting like a tool in the Crate, is not using the Crate as punishment??? He already knows that the Crate, is his safe place but under certain circumstances he chooses to act like a tool???

The more a dog practices a bad behavior, the better at they become and the harder it becomes to stop the behavior. That's where your at, apparently with "this" puppy, who is not your other puppies.

Pro's don't have time to screw around with crap like this. But it's a puppy and most likely a "pro" (and yes people do send puppies to board and train ... much to my surprise?? ) would have given the puppy three days to get over this crap??? And if it then continued the puppy would have been "Corrected in the Crate for acting like a tool.

But JQP, is for the most part willing to let the madness continue for quite some time??? There are as I view it two viable options?? Either "correct" the puppy in the Crate ( and thus far I have made mention of how to do that exactly. :)

Or ... instead of "fighting" with a behavior you don't want?? Train a behavior you do want and then the bad behavior will/could "Self Extinguish."

"Self Extinguishing Behavior" is apparently actually a thing?? Kholer makes mention of it in his Book, the Kholer Method of Dog Training." But he makes no mention of how to achieve that "exactly?"

But ... I'm "That Guy" as I am want to say and I figured it out. My formerly, H/A Over Size Working line
GSD, did not get a single "Correction" for untoward Aggression towards a single person in his life.

He was still not a fan of "strangers" but he knew how to behave because I made good choices for him, and I showed him what I wanted and how I expected him to behave, worked out fine. :)

But don't know ... maybe the episode with him is over??? Plan A correct him in the Crate will solve this fast. Plan B is gonna take a rethink and more time. You'd have to train a behavior you do want first. If the "issue" is just keeping him settled after meals ... then it's beating a dead horse time as it were forget the after meal Crating and ... train "Place." :)

Ah man! I should have corrected before!
All it took was a "no" when he started!
Did this this morning and this evening and he stopped and layed down in his crate.
I'm not an all positive owner but I didn't want to associate the crate with something negative so didn't correct him before.
Life is a learning journey :)

LOL ... outstanding!

Even I ... am impressed! I'd have recommend a "Bonker" a towel bound with rubber bands and you throw it at the "Crate" and say NO or uh nothing, then it's an act of God correction, not sure on that one??

But you figured it out and no, it was not about the Crate, it was about the "behavior" in the crate. Most likely you had to suck up it and utter a "NO" as a "Command" and not a "Suggestion???"

NO is a verbal "marker" and once properly trained ... it means"stop doing whatever it is your doing and don't do it again!" Struddell heard "NO" so often, at one point I was concerned she would think her name was "No???" She was always doing something new different and stupid???

But it worked out well in the long run. No, was how I taught to chase bunnies to the North (Mountains) and not South (Hwy) off leash in the NV Desert ... worked out fine.

You got caught off guard by the "my other puppies were not like this bit??" And confusing the Crate with an unwanted behavior in the Crate. And owners get "conflicted" when they hear that they need to "correct" Foo Foo for bad behavior and not bribe her with a "cookie." :)

People always tend to "assume" that "Correcting a dog always means, "Yank the crap out of a dog with a leash??" But no ... that's not how it works, what is an effective correction, depends on the dog and the issue???

You did a Good job in any case. :)
