Default Dew Claw Removal

Hello all, I have another question about boxer puppies. Is it normal / suggested to have dew claws removed off of boxers? Most breeders I saw don't advertise this, but the ones I'm working with talk about it in passing. I know this is done on some types of working dogs, but what about boxers?

Dew claw removal is common in boxers, especially, if you are working with a reputable breeder.

How long have you been in Parker?

As we were in search of our boxer puppy, we found that almost all of the breeders we looked at had their puppies' dew claws removed. I'm not an expert on it...but I do know its very common. We ended up getting a puppy who did not have her dew claws removed

Very common. Here is Woody the day he had his removed. This is something that usually gets done when their tails are docked. I think they advise that you have it done before they are 2 weeks old. I am sure someone can say for sure though.

Duke still has his dewclaws. I don't know why she didn't remove them. I wish they were gone. He has ripped my jacket twice jumping on me.

Reputable breeders have it done according to the breed standard, we have the dew claws removed at the same time the tails are being docked, usually in the first 2 or so days after they are born. sorry jallon100 we most have started replying at the same time and i didn't see your post

For about 3 years. It's a pretty good town.

The ABC Breed Standard says - "The dewclaws may be removed."

American Boxer Club Breed Standard

Personally I have only had one Boxer whose dewclaws remained intact. He was my rescue. From the look of them it looked like some horrible person tried to PULL them out. They were deformed and one stuck straight out like a nail.

I am reading John P. Wagner's 1936 edition of The Boxer. Will be interesting to see if dewclaws are mentioned.
