My almost 8 month old male boxer is only 56 lbs. is this average size or a bit on the smaller size?

Every dog is different based on their parents. My dogs parents were 70lbs for the dog and 60lbs for the bitch. My dog is a little on the smaller side, so he's only 50lbs now, because of meningitis, but he should be around 55-60lbs by now. So I'd say your dog is right on track, they grow and fill out until their 24-36 months.
There's also some fun info here:
how old is your puppy, and how much does your puppy weigh?

Chance is a female boxer and she is only 50 pounds. We don't know her exact age since she was a rescue, but the vet thinks about 5 years old-ish. She is a very small boxer. Your pup still has some time to grow, however.

Mine is almost 5 and he weighs anywhere between 65-70lbs on average, his weight flucuates.

Around 8 months they are about 85% of their adult weight. My guesstimate is he will average out about 65lbs as an adult. Which is normal.

Depending on the bloodlines and sex, from what I've seen boxers tend to be anywhere from 45-90lbs... They're all different as far as growth rates go, yours could be done growing up (still filling out) or he/she could keep growing for the next year +... Both of my dogs (boxer mixes) grew like weeds until they were about 8-9 months old, then the female pretty much stopped... the male grew and grew, but more slowly... Now they are 1 yr (female) and 1yr 8mos (male) and I'm not entire convinced they both aren't still growing... It's definitely slowed way down either way...

Our first boxer was 57 pounds at 8 months, and very lanky. By one year he was starting to fill out a bit. If he had lived longer, I was expecting him to reach 65-70 pounds based on the size of his parents. Last weekend I was cleaning up our office and I compared the vet records between him and our new puppy, who is 13 weeks now. So far, the new pup has consistenly been 5 pounds heavier at each vet visit, so maybe he'll be a big one. It sounds like your pup is right on track.

Sounds like he is on the right track. Bella is 10 months old and is 62lbs. Their growth kinda slows down going forward though but they are not done yet

It really all depends on the parents - like everyone else said. just like people, a dog's weight and size will vary.

Right now Gus is about a week shy of being 1 year old and he's about 65 pounds. His mama was small but I have never seen his dad in person (both were rescued from a puppy mill so their health and breeding was not top-notch).

Like what everyone else has already said; depends on the parents. My guy is 15 months and fluctuates between 55 and 60 lbs.

Chaya is about to be 9 months old and she's only 36 lbs. She is like a mini and gets lots of attention from strangers. They absolutely love her.
