I'm still new to this myself, but I did a ton of research before we brought Bruno home and what I think I found is that the protein levels aren't an issue, it's making sure the calcium and phosphorous levels aren't too high. Apparently Boxers can be sensitive to higher protein levels though (gas, loose stool, etc.), but it totally varies by individual so you won't know until you try it.
My plan with our puppy is Blue Freedom (as long as he does well, we're still in transition from the old garbage food) and then as an adult hopefully something like Wilderness, Orijen, or Earthborn Natural grain-free. I don't see a point in trying to move him to a 2nd puppy food once we get him off the previous garbage onto the Freedom but I suppose we could always change it up to test the higher protein thing with him since he won't go to adult food until next September.
