Default Caution feeding necks

Re: the raw turkey necks - use a lot of caution when feeding these. Despite the blanked notion that feeding raw can not result in chocking hazards for dogs, one of my Boxers nearly died from getting one caught in his throat & actually passed out. Passing out likely caused the muscles to loosen & he then somehow got up & vomited. I will never give necks again. I realize that the processed is not as good in terms of teeth cleaning et al, but I now use only processed raw, raw marrow bones & organic chicken wings. So, please monitor them while they eat. I am ever thankful my boy recovered.

Hi there! Just got back on this. I had to take the dogs off raw for a bit. They weren't getting any better and were getting dangerously thin. Nothing was working to help the "runs" that they had. Our veterinarian made us feel like morons/criminals/freaks so we switched vets. The new vet put them on an antibiotic called "Tylan" and they slowly got better. Of course, the vet put them on that crappy Hills prescription dry food (which i called "corn chowder" and felt guilty feeding them) but as soon as they stabilized and gained weight, we SLOWLY transitioned them back to raw (over several weeks) and now they're fully on raw and doing great (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!!). I assume my dogs didn't handle the "fast for 24 hours and then go to chicken" method. But everyone's happy now. Thanks so much for your support during the process. It was unnerving because the poor babies got so sick. They look beautiful now.

I'm having the similar issues.. We started feeding Lilo raw last Sunday, and around Wednesday started having running stool. So, I've been waking up to running stool since then. She can hold it during the day but seems she can't overnight. Been feeding skinless chicken quarters as recommended in the sticky and got her whole chicken bones that includes neck, back etc from local shop. Tried to feed her that this morning, and she doesnt seem interested. Not sure if she's not feeling well or just not interested in that type of chicken. Not sure what to do, since she's been having running stool for several days in a row. I'm thinking of giving her until next Sunday (2wks) and see if things improve. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
-Jorge

Hey Jorge,

What state are you in? Sounds like your girl needs way more bone intake. I would only offer necks/backs until her stool has been firm for at least 5 days. Some dogs aren't fans of chewing these so maybe I can help you find a ground source.

Today started week 4, runny stool got better but it started again (yesterday) 2 days after introducing chicken + skin..removed skin again, and gave entire chicken carcass. Hoping that will improve things.

Since I've been feeding chicken quarters for almost 4 weeks now, should I introduce organ or other meat, once the running stool improve?

She's loving it, first time in almost 6 years that she's so excited when is dinner time. I want to stick with it, because she's finally enjoying her meals.

Thanks!

-Jorge

No, we don't move onto other proteins until you have consistent solid stools..... you need to feed more bone content to do this. Less meat more bone.
