I did my grocery shopping tonight and a thought occured to me. They had a lot of meat with the discounted stickers on them because they were close to expiring. I spoke to the man working at the time and asked if they have to throw a lot of meats away. He said sometimes they do, but most of the time they donate it to the soup kitchen. I asked if they ever sell it at a discount and he kind of looked at me weird so I told him I feed it to my dogs and I could still use it and would be willing to pay for some at a discounted price. He couldn't authorize it, but said I could call tomorrow to talk to the manager so I'll be doing that.
My question for those of you who have done this before is what kind of deal did you ask for? I'm thinking of asking for something like 50% off the discounted price, but if they're just throwing it away maybe I could get it at like 75% off? I'm not much of a negotiator so I'm not sure if that's reasonable or not. LOL

I love to negotiate prices with people. If your good at 50% off the discount price, I would start by asking for 75% off. That way when you drop to the 50% off they will think they've done good but you are still getting it for what you were thinking in the first place. Not to mention start at say the 75% off & go down in increments of 5% or 10% at a time. Good Luck & let us know how it goes.

Yeah ours does too. I'm not sure what % they go by, but they have the yellow stickers saying $X off. I was hoping that if those didn't sell and they expired that they threw that meat out so I could grab it at a deal. This is one of our major grocery chains so I'm hoping if I call more of the independant type of stores they might be able to help.

I did this a while back as well and I got the same response. Its against company policy. I still purchase discounted meats if it works out to less than $2 lb. Yesterday at Loblaws I got pork side rib racks that were on sale for $1.99lb. Well I guess some packages got knicked with the knife when opening the box so they discounted those at an additional 30% off! I grabbed 3 packages

I bought a lot of meats (turkey, chicken, and beef) yesteday discounted at about $35-$40. Funny my dogs end up being at least half of my grocery bill! LOL I don't mind though. I'd rather pay more for real meat than boring less healthy kibble!
