Thanks for the tidbits everyone - tonight we went to Petsmart and bought a thundershirt as well as the DAP wall plugin. We tried the thundershirt on him briefly at Petsmart to ensure it was a good size and he immediately seemed to calm down (his first trip to petsmart too) - we left it on maybe five minutes or so. He just stood next to us and watched the other dogs with no real antsy-ness to him. Once we took it off so I could pay for it, he immediately started pulling towards other dogs and with curiosity all around the store. So maybe there's hope for us with the thundershirt. We will try it tomorrow while we are gone and see if perhaps he appears calmer when we return (less slobber in the cage hopefully) - and we plugged the DAP in to the wall near his crate, so we'll see if that also starts to help. Being an engineer, I should know to try only one thing at a time (have a control element here!) but what the hell, why not just use both right off the bat. We also bought a laser pointer tonight while we were at petsmart - and we are playing with it and putting the pointer in the crate and letting him follow it in there for a while and then bringing it back out - trying to get him used to the idea that the crate won't bite him.

Really hoping for some relief for the little guy. Obviously we aren't home to witness him freaking out in his crate all day, but it would make me feel better to know he is calmer while alone.

Hope everything works for you. I know the DAP plugin seems to be helping or she just got used to her kennel. Keep us posted.

Rough morning - couldn't get Apollo to want to go anywhere near the crate. It's like he knows what's bound to happen aka - him being left alone. We worked last night on putting him in and out a few different times while we were at home, but I think for him, the mornings are different. After about 30 minutes of trying to get him in the crate I had to forcefully put him in against his will, which just made both Apollo and myself very upset. I was already late for work though, so I had no choice. I had a frozen PB kong in there, a piece of my husband's clothing, his nylabone, .... still nothing could convince him to go near the crate. Is it possible he's just not a 'crate' dog and would be okay if we left him outside of the crate? I'm tempted to leave him out tomorrow and have my mom come over and check on his progress every 2 hours - ensure he hasn't torn the house apart. Thoughts?!

Can you block him somehow? Using a baby gate and let him in only one area? Not sure of that's an option for you or not, but worth a try! Good luck

I would be too worried to let him have the run of the house. We tried that only once. He peed all by the door and tore down the curtains and blinds and ate the doorknob! My fiances prior boxers couldn't be left alone either. And neither can my Roscos little girlfriend, she's even more destructive than him. If you really want him to be out...u should perform a couple tests, set up a camera and spy on him and give him 30 mins to himself and see what happens. I would just keep trying what you're doing with the thunder shirt and all and I think it will get better though! Good luck!

A little update on Apollo - we have been leaving him roam free since he never has taken well to the crate and for the most part he does okay. Recently though, now that he is growing and getting more energetic by the day, he has started getting into things - baseboard chewing, rug chewing, and now even pulling my books and DVDs off of our DVD bookcase... And not just getting them off the bookcase, but chewing them to hell and back. We leave him a frozen PB kong, nylabone, ropes, other chew toys, etc daily so it's not like he doesn't have his OWN stuff to chew on! Looks like we may have to revert back to the hated crate for Apollo. At least until he is out of the chewing stage I imagine.

Has anyone else had experience with a boxer who literally drools/slobbers to death all day while in his/her crate? Did they grow out of this? It saddens me so to see him so upset, but EVERY type of crate training we have attempted he doesn't take to - he won't go near his food if we try to feed him in the crate, we've tried just leaving him in for 5 minutes here or there, but after 2 minutes in he is already a slobbery drooling mess.

I personally never had issues with kenneling either Maggie or Pheona. Murphy on the other hand was a challenge. We tried everything but she hated it. We ended up putting a kennel in our room for bedtime. Then for when we step out, I bought a plug in at Petsmart that duplicates the pharamone smell of the mother. I don't know if that helped or if Murphy just came to accept that fighting the kennel wasn't getting her anywhere. I wish you the best.

A dog with separation anxiety, if not crated, will literally destroy a house every single time you leave. Period. Separation anxiety has nothing to do with the crate. It's a behavioral issue that will continue, crated or not, every single time you leave the house. The problem will only escalate unless you start doing some serious behavior modification work. It can get better, but it's going to take some work.

I agree with the above statement! Wyatt has never had issues with being in the crate... I have since bought a thunder shirt and love it. Wyatt wouldn't walk unless there's two people. Now with the shirt he will walk with just me. At petco you have 45 days to try it and return it. I would suggest going that route and if you find out its not working then just return it. Also other forum members have been discussing giving melatonin. Maybe talk with your vet and see how they feel. You would prob need a 3 my tablet. It helps with anxiety. Just a suggestion.

Your dog sounds just like ours! She is a year old now. We could not get her use to her crate. I felt so bad for her. She also was soaked every time we came home. Not only that but she figured out how to get out many times. We recorder her to see what she does. she freaks out!!! slobbers all over, i am pretty sure yours is the same thing. Once she got out she would jump out the window straight through the screen and run to her boxer friends house! We even tried putting her crate out side thinking she would feel better out side. Nope same thing! Well anyways. We ended up getting another puppy! He is 3 months younger then her. We put two crates together thinking she would be fine because of him. Still no luck. Well one day we had them both in the crate together out side. For some reason I forgot to lock the door. When we came home they were both in the yard. So the next day we tried it again. Only for a hour and she would stay in the yard and not leave the puppies side! Our yard is fenced in, but because she would always jump the window and even the fence before the puppy I never though we could leave her out side while we were gone. But because if Drako she stays. If u can leave her in the yard maybe try that. I was going to buy a big out side dog kennel. Only for when we had to work. That would be my other suggestion. We never had to get that far. We also tried the thunder jacket. She ate it off. I think if u out him back in it will be worse now. Good luck to u. Keep me posted !
