Hi all. Been a while since I have posted.. been really swamped. Anyway.. I posted about this on another Boxer forum (boxercrazy) but I figured the more places the better the chances of an answer. Anyway, here is what is happening.
Occasionally while walking Dakota we will come across an area that she will sniff at very aggressively and after doing that she will proceed to rub her head and face in the area and then her entire body. She will do this a couple times in the same spot. At first I brushed it off and assumed she was itching or just trying to get a scent or leave her scent because there was never anything on the grass where she would do it. Then one day we came across a rotting carcass of a squirrel and she started sniffing it. Once I noticed what she was sniffing I was getting ready to pull her away then she started to act like she was going to rub her face, dead and body into the area with the dead animal. Then today she was starting to do the same things again in an area that had some strange looking poop. Why is this? Why is it that they will attempt to put the scent of dead, rotting, and "crappy" things on them? I noticed a few people on the other forum experienced the same things. Have any of you? Does anyone have any ideas on why they might act this way? Thanks. |

Its a dog behaviour. Essentially it makes them more interesting to the others in the pack. That equals them getting more attention...that type of thing.
Dogs really are gross sometimes though... |

I read that in the wild it is a hunting strategy. If you roll in the nastiness around u then u won't smell like a dog (the enemy of the prey) so then they'll be surprised that the poop smell is attacking them. Dunno if it's true but it sounded legit. Lol
