Hey there! My hubby and I got our adorable little Ellie In September. She was born 7/15/12 and has such a personality. She loves being around (or on) people constantly! She is very smart and is great at always sitting or laying down on command. She is a well behaved puppy, however we are having trouble getting her to come when we call her. She will come with mention of food, or if she feels like coming, but sometimes we call her and she just stands there and stares. Any suggestions/tricks for training a pup to come when called? Also having a hard time training her to stay on command.
Thanks! |

Generally when I open our back door both of my girls run to me. Sometimes to get our older girl in, I will have to grab a treat but generally when I call her she'll come in. Now she's more stubborn with my husband. As for stay, we've had to work in short distances & then work up to moving further away. We can now set Murphy's food dish down, tell her stay & turn our back and she will not move till she's commanded to do so. We also make her do a sit & wait to go outside and to come back in. You just have to keep up the work & yes for us, we started out with treats for doing good. Both of my girls are foodies (as I call them). Good Luck!!

Ellie will always sit and wait for her food, she mostly just won't listen if she wants to stay outside and I call her inside. I will try using treats; hopefully it helps her form the habit of listening. Thanks for the advice/encouragement!

Get a long lead or retractable leash and let Ellie all the way out on it then call her. If she comes she gets a treat and praise. If she doesn't come, real her in and then praise and treat. Repeat this a bunch of times every day and she will learn to come. After she gets it down, then treat every other time and always praise, slowly decreasing the times when she gets a treat but never stopping them all together.
