Maybe it was his way of saying he preferred something else?

Mine drop pieces as they chew but will always gobble it back up after they've finished what is in the bowl. My parents had a dog that would actually pick up her dish & carry it into the living room & proceed to lay down and eat. It was quite funny.

Buster carrys his kibble to the other room mouthful by mouthful before he will eat any of it silly pup but he does do a great job cleaning it all up
