Hi. I am new here. My family & I are looking into adding a boxer to our family, We have never owned a boxer, so we are trying to learn about the breed. we live on Long Island NY. We have looked into rescue groups but none will adopt to a family with a child under 8. which we understand. I have spoken to 1 breeder & she told me her puppies are $2,600 & up. Is this the norm? She was very pushy & I felt very uncomfortable. We are hoping to add a puppy to our family in the spring. We are looking for advise & guidance.
thank you! LoriAnn, Dave & Sammie. |

Hello and welcome from Texas.
You need to find a breeder who has had the parents tested for the proper tests that a breeder of Boxers need to have done. If you feel uncomfotable then do not buy from her. Price does not determine if they are bred well and for the right reasons. Good luck in finding a reputable breeder in your area. |

There are a lot of responsible breeders in your area actually. If you google the Maryland Boxer Club and the Western New York Boxer Club that should give you a good start on finding a good breeder.

The minimum you should be looking for is echo, holter, and thyroid panel. Not all breeders do hips, but most do. Other additional tests would be ARVC and DM. Not everyone does ARVC as some don't believe it to be useful and DM is still sort of new, but becoming more popular.
Hope that helps! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |
