Default what to ask when looking for a breeder

We are thinking of getting a second boxer, and I ask lots of questions to breeders. Some of them question why I am questioning, for example I ask for copies of the parents genetic tests as proof because anyone could "say" they test.

But in my eyes if they have a problem with my questions they aren't the breeder for me...

My question is, am I being unrealistic?? What other questions should I be asking other than SAS, DM, cardiomyopathy etc testing??

Nope, not unrealistic! Like you said, anyone can say anything.... Hell, I'm a Victoria secret runway model (in my dreams right?!) if they hesitate or question you then turn away. Any good reputable breeder I think would be more than happy to provide that info for you and sit down and talk about it. After all they are trying to better the breed and not make a paycheck.

I know Kari (2manydogs) had a post a while ago about what health testing should be done and etc. I think the point was to prove reputable health testing breeders ARE in it for bettering the breed bc they don't make much profit at all after all the testing is done. I'll have to try and look for it.

You can look up the registered names of the dogs on the ofa website. That is where I found Echo's parents and their parents.

Absolutely not; like Wyatt's Momma said, any decent breeder who is in it for the betterment of the breed would be more than happy to show the health testing they have done for their dogs. Check out Kari of "2manydogs" I too remember her post about the cost of a litter; her dogs are gorgeous btw

Thanks for the posts

I was talking to one breeder, she said she wouldn't email me the results but would share them when I come look at the pups... Thought that was a bit strange but whatever

One of the sire's tests was 'cardio' - clear

Wondering if that encompasses all cardio things like cardiomyopathy, SAS, ARVC etc... Or maybe I need clarification?

The thread is called "cost of raising a litter" check it out, tells what health testing Kari does and approximate cost which defines why you pay more for a good reputable breeder!

What your asking for is what I wish all people asked for and demanded! There are definitely breeders who will happily show you test results. If anything I would love to show you proof that my dog is completely healthy because it's something I'm proud of. Keep looking until you find one that fits what you want. If you need help I could throw a couple links your way.

In the case of the one lady who didn't want to email them to you, I've heard of weird things happening like an OFA certificate being changed to a different dog's name or stolen by an irresponsible breeder. That may be why they don't want to share it with you via email. They may just be overly cautious. Crazy stuff can happen sometimes.

I know crazy stuff happen, right?!? I just inquired about a pup and the woman told me she doesn't health test anymore because she said that what she found was that Health testing didn't mean anything because sometimes the one she didn't health test actually lived longer than the ones that she didů

I thought that was a little weird... So you don't health test because you found that the dogs that your breeding didn't live very long? Maybe you should not breed that line anymore! She calls herself a breeder and has a website and everything yet she's breeding dogs without doing any health testing at all. I know that health testing doesn't 100% guarantee anything, but at least you're not intentionally breeding bad blood! It is a true shame.

I have further found out that the lady that didn't want to email me them said that she's only had a mini test and her dog is going to be getting the full testing later next year before his next breeding but that she's been breeding this line for over 15 years and she has a good reputation and she would never want to ruin that. She seems okay. I think I have narrowed it down to her and another person who is 100% for testing...

There are strict requirements to breed dogs in certain countries, but there must be people who will always cheat for the money. To get a ZTP rating a dog needs to have hips x-rayed to look for hip dysplasia, and an eco by a board certified cardiologist to look for aortic stenosis, or sub-aortic stenosis and other heart conditions. There is also testing for conformation and temperament. The US Boxer Association adheres to a strict breeding program.
