Default Neutering......WTF???

I have recently done quite a bit of researching and I see that some people feel it is more appropriate to spay/neuter dogs around a year and a half to two years of age to insure sexual maturity, and others are more comfortable with 6 months as a minimum age. I have recently spoken to a breeder who is insistent upon neutering at 8 weeks of age. I have never heard of anyone neutering that young? I had asked the breeder the reasoning behind this and told them that I am completely uncomfortable with that. Anyone have info about this?

That kinda sounds moronic. What did they say in response to that?

Well, I really didn't give them too much of a chance to reply, I was honestly in a rush to end the conversation. I had also asked her about Health Testing and she said; "oh yeah i health test." Naturally I asked for further information and she replied that what she has been doing lately is having the vet listen to their hearts and if they need further testing then she wont let them in her breeding program..............I pretty much said I appreciated her time and to have a good night.

I figured as much. Sounds like a shady "breeder" to begin with. Nice.

I just feel like i have been looking for soooooo long now. Either I have not been able to find a breeder I am comfortable with or a particular kennel is not planning a litter. I have been speaking with one breeder in particular and I am trying to convince them that I am great guy and would love to have a puppy form their program but they dont like the idea of shipping. I am in Texas and they are in Pennsylvania.

All of my moms dogs were neutered at 8 weeks old. Its pretty common around here. They never had any problems, and still don't and they are going on 9 years old, 3 females, 1 male. Rescues, and shelters do it all the time. I don't see a problem with it. Its the only way to be 100% sure someone won't use the dog for breeding.

My boxers just got neutered when they were 11 and 9 months old.

I never heard of spaying/neutering being a bad thing until I came to this board.

Sterilization is a great way to keep population under control. Form a breeding view it is a way to safeguard all their hard work and of course their lineage. From a training aspect, it is easier to control or remove aggression. There have been numerous studies that support the theory sterilization actually promotes greater health for the animal. I am pro for neutering however; at such a young age all sorts of complications can arise from the procedure itself, just the fact that being put under and not knowing if their heart is strong enough to come out of the anesthetics or not. However, a few studies even conclude that the sterilization at such a young age may cause the skull to be too narrow and the chest being narrow, legs can elongated, and a few other physical traits can be thrown off due to the chemical imbalance or lack thereof.

As was mentioned, shelters and rescues commonly do pediatric sterilization, and I do know of some breeders who do it also (in other breeds as well as Boxers). I don't personally agree with it, as the gonads are an important part of the endocrine system and are necessary for growth, maturity, and long-term health. The link stiflersmom posted above is a review of about 55 studies on sterilization showing some significant long-term health effects - increased risks of certain cancers, cruciate ligament tears, thryoid problems, etc. There's also this paper from the AVMA journal which reviews 183 studies with the same findings.

Neither are completely against sterilization; the point is that a one-size-fits-all approach is not in the best interests of most dogs. Decisions should be made on an individual basis, based on breed, family history, age, lifestyle, etc. The main point, IMO, is that there are, in fact, risks to sterilization aside from just those associated with a surgery - for decades we were told there were only benefits, and many people still don't realize there is any downside to the procedure. With the information from these two papers, owners are able to consult with their veterinarians and have their dogs sterilized - or not - at an age that is appropriate for the individual dog, with the lowest chances of long-term (and short-term!) health problems.
