Warning: The importance of finding a reputable breeder!

I write this with a huge amount of sadness as our beloved 2.5 boxer baby girl passed away recently. What started out as a limp in her back leg and what we thought was a soft tissue injury turned out to be far worse. Our poor little girl, Abby, had a neurological prob. and a growth in her spine. After spending over $6000 in vet bills, seeing specialists, paying for an MRI, and getting her a spinal tap, and trying her on certain meds, we could do nothing to save her.
My husband and I had to hold her in our arms and say goodbye to our doggy. She was truly the center of our lives, and we have been left absolutely heartbroken.
We got Abby 2.5 years ago from a "backyard breeder". Found her on kijiji, and went to visit her when she was 6 weeks old. Saw her parents and the owners told us that one was a pure bred registered dog. The mother was from a pet store. They showed us vet reports saying they were healthy. And showed us papers from the vet stating that little Abby was healthy.
We should have known better. And I wish we had done more research or someone could have warned us that buying a dog like this come attached with huge risks for genetic disorders that can end their lives at a very young age.
While I wouldn't take back the time we had with Abby for 1 minute, and I'm grateful she came into our lives, I will now do everything in my power to stop people from buying these puppies, and to stop these people from irresponsibly breeding their dogs just to make some money.
Abby was a special dog - she had an unbelievably gentle and playful nature. She was amazing around my young niece and nephew, got along well with every dog she encountered, and was super affectionate.
Some of the signs that she may have had probs from the start? Nothing in particular. She was quite small - only around 40 pounds (but extremely solid and muscular), had funny flying nun ears, and didn't look like a typical boxer. These were all the things we loved about her though!
So please read this and choose to make your decision carefully. Although Abby passed away only a few weeks ago, we have begun to carefully research local breeders for the next boxer that we will bring into our lives.

Heartbreaking. I am so sorry for your loss of a very beautiful girl - flying nun ears and all! What you say about finding a good breeder is true. There are many on here who can help with that. Peace.

So sorry to hear of poor Abby and all the heartache you had to endure. I am glad that she had you as her humans, for although her life was short, it is obvious she was loved and cared for greatly.

Welcome to the forum, may your next pup give you many, many more wonderful years!

So sorry for your loss - Abby was absolutely adorable. And those ears, although floppy, it stood up - never quite saw something like that before. You and Abby were lucky to have had each other.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss and Abby's health issues. She was very lucky to have you and your husband taking care of her. She looks like she was a super sweet, cute girl. Good luck in your research.

Thank you for the kind replies. It all helps so much. Not an hour goes by at the moment where we don't think about Abby - it's still unbelievable to us that this even happened. Thanks again.

Abby is beautiful! She is waiting at the bridge now,and she's gonna guide you to that special little egg head that you will bring home to love. You'll understand when you meet that new baby that it was abby who took you to her or him. It will get easier. For the mean time,we are all thinking of you x x x
