Well if it helps ... your doing better than me!!

But "Prey Recall" is extremely difficult!! If it does not work, one's dog can be gone in a flash!!

I thought I had lost Struddell, once when the stupid rabbit ran South towards the Hwy and not North towards the Mountains??? I lost track of her in the brush and I could not see her??? And lost I saw she was heading towards the Hwy fast!! We were parked a mile away but at 30 some miles an hour ... the Hwy is pretty close!!!

I Called and called and saw and heard nothing!! And suddenly the desert looked vast and bleak! My heart sank, I headed back to the car to drive around and see if I could find her??? And ... much to my surprise and delight ... there she was!!! So par for the course, the rabbit did ditch her. *They always did( and after failing to pick up the scent ... she headed back to the car! I did not know she could do that???

But after that, I modded our rabbit chasing game! She still could her twenty to 25 yards out in front bit but I scanned ahead of her for bunnies! And if I saw break cover in front of her I would shout "NO!!" And she would freeze, if the Bunny broke North Mnts, I'd say OK and off she'd go!!

I never really had to worry at that point cause it was usually just 50 yard dash down a fire road, and she lose the rabbit in the brush when it made a right turn ... they always broke right?? She'd switch to scent hot on it's butt and lose track in the brush!

I would watch the rabbit come back onto the straight and sail off in the distance! And I'd watch the rabbit speed off in the distance. It happened every time and she never figured it out.

But ... I also took advantage of our terrain here. As in uh ... no trees! So good sight lines and the bunnies used the fire roads as that worked with most dog's!!

But really I did not call her off a chase as much as I did "Control" a chase. Most likely I could have done "either" verbally ... with her! But I don't know as I never had the need to do so. What we did worked just fine. But perhaps she was a once in a lifetime dog, hmm ... also.

Cuz with my Bella (off leash in open desert, let alone bunnie's???) ... don't even think about it!!! If you have to have absolute Rock Solid, recall?? You pretty much have to use an E-Collar?

It will be new for me, but I've done all I can with a SLL. A man has got to know his limitations.

Ok we will wait to see?? But yep I have done that also!! To keep Bella from going after a freaking Harley???

I had the long line on here and she was by side. But I was gathering up the slack when a Bike came by and she tried to bolt in the street??? The leash was useless at that point so I stabbed my stick in front of her!!!

And that stopped her cold!! So new dog and lesson learned! As I had never seen that crap before, with "my other dog's."

I think Bell just may be the dog that needs the e-collar. have you tried the yet? And when are you going to share her photo ? Been waiting. LOL I think I'd like a e collar for my poodle but the one I want is pricey and I don't really need it I want it. He has pretty good recall but not when he is distracted so that is something I still have to work on.

Yeah sigh, the difference between 7 months and a year is "apparently" much greater then I realizes???

And I have to say "Hybrid" that she is ... the one thing "Bella is showing is why "GSD" first owner's don't tend to have a lot of time or patience for "Boxers!" IE ... I don't have the time or patience for this kinda crap!!!

And Bella thus far seems to be determined to exhibit both the best and worst and best characteristic of both Breeds! As she does seem to luv people?? But she is just so over top the top obnoxious, ... I don't even try, to let her meet anyone!

Now we did have a very interesting day at the Dog Park today ... uh kinda. Dog's were there so we did not go in ... off course. There was a lady coming in with a Little Poodle, and while he did seem like he would he could be OK??

He just had to much energy for me. So I spoke to her first and told her she could have the Park and we go around to the other side.

Now in as much as we both out side the Park, I am pretty sure that despite her dog's high level of excitement, it could have worked??

But sigh, it's me! 20 years of ... no other dog's is seriously difficult to over come ... apparently?? So I gave her the front part of the Park and we moved on.

And now the plan was to go around and we could go to the back half of the Dog Park and go into that area?? But as walked the fence line I saw there were two dog's already there so that was not gonna work??

But it did prove to be enlightening nonetheless! Bella is near the fence line and not one but two dog's come near!!! But the one that came near the fence to do a "Nose Sniff" was a Great Pyrenees!! And yeah he was freaking Hugh!!!!

And that dog ... even from behind the fence was "Amazing" with other Dog's!! Very "Rocky like" I must say! He just sniffed Bella a little bit and stood there and that was it! Zero reaction ... absolutely "Neutral." Bella was {I think a bit confused??) And so did not met him with the expected fence aggression?? But instead did a play bow and a quick dart to enlist a response??? And from the other side of the fence with the Pureness ... she got "nothing!!"

Outstanding, I was quite comfortable with that as that is pretty much what Rocky did in the face of tools.

But unfortunately ... I felt I could not go in because the Pyrenees buddy was a little Lapso (thing) that just kept up with the Bark, Bark, Bark bit from a distance admittedly. Most likely he was fine also but to much for me so we moved on.

And no as of yet No E-Collar and also uh No Recall??? I missed up bte2's advise to work for food and instead created a treat monster, my bad??? And at this point my options for training uh any off leash recall ... seem pretty limited??? So yeah Bella is gonna be my first E-Collar trained dog. I don't seem to have any other options at this point???

But moving on and no pictures thus far??? LOL, well that is just me ... I'm kinda lazy and she is kinda hard to get the picture I want to post. A profile shot but it's kinda hard cuz, she is always moving!!

But ... no she is not a "imaginary dog" on my part. Cuz for one, as the saying goes ... "you can't make this crap up!"

So that much said ... here she is. :

Aww Chip she is a pretty girl. I have been working in my yard with my poodle for recall. Still not good but I take two balls out now with me. He loves to retrieve. So when I throw one he bring it back but stays at a safe distance where he knows I can't touch hi collar . I make he drop the ball he has and I throw the other. We do this small times. I am now getting to where I actually have both and of course then he is right in my face as he says hey give me one. So we o a little work, sit, hell, walk , sit, down, sit walk then I free him and he gets to play, in between this I am touching his collar as if I were going to leash him up. Its slow but I think it i helping. However in an emergency he would still not have any recall. I have to disappear from sight before he will come looking.

Yeah the Goat heads can be a PIA! But I haven't had that issue in awhile??

Right now my biggest concern at our Dog Park (usually we are the only dog there) and on walks with a long leash ... sigh.

Is her habit of "LOOKING" for Rattle Snakes!!! Any place they are likely to be is where she likes to put her face!!!

It's winter now so the danger is most likely low?? But next year she is going to a "Rattle Snake Aversion Class!" Stupid dog ....

Rocky was much smarter, we only had one area around with high grass where Rattler's could be??? And when Rocky and I would go in there, he'd step aside and let me take point!

LOL ... not a stupid dog ie if you wanna go that way??? You can lead.

But the Musher's yeah I was gonna start using that, as with snow and ice covered sidewalks, everybody uses "Ice Melt." And I was worried about that stuff on his paws???

We do the ball thing. And while she is still not that great at "Drop It," she will do the "Heel Flip" and can't "focus" that well on sitting and keeping the ball! So I can pry it out without much effort.

And yeah "recall" in the yard in a distraction free environment works. But that is as far as it goes! No chance of any control out and about and there is also the unexpected at times arrival of Motorcycles for god's sake???

My stick saved her the first time month's ago. And I had forgotten she could/would do that?? And on another longer walk I had her by my side on a short leash and a bike came around the corner where we standing and she tried again???? Stupid dog.
