Default Dog Parks

I responded to someone else's post about a boxer turned aggressive and now having to avoid dog parks - a story I can relate to. I stopped taking Goomba to the dog park about 1.5/2 years ago. Partly because Hurricane Sandy washed it away and partly because he started getting aggressive. Since then, I've been doing one-on-one training where the trainer told me she'd never take a dog to the dog park no matter what. It really opened my eyes and I spent the morning doing some research on why people think dog parks are bad.

I was just curious what other users had to say on this topic. He still plays with a dog at work which he was already friends with. And I certainly walk and play with him. Boxers are known to be loyal and family dogs - do we as humans want them to play with other dogs more than they care to? Can they be just as happy playing with humans instead of other dogs? Do you set up small play dates with dogs yours is already friends with in a way to avoid dog parks? Did you get a second dog so yours would have a friend and again you could avoid dog parks?

I used to frequent alot to the dog parks. I've had several instinces there with stupid people including my male having a total of 8 staples. I even took both of my dogs there. I've seen how its changed both of them. Although we used to go alot we haven't been in a while and don't plan on going at all. I met some good people there and we meet for play dates and go swimming in the summer and walking or hiking if we don't swim. My youngest boxer I think it has affected her more as she has become aggressive and we r working with her on that

we had a bad experience at the dog park and now the only time we do go is when it is empty and safe to let the boys go for a good run - they love it. so after 10-15 minutes we leash up the boys and go for a nice walk (no pulling )

I too find myself avoiding the dog parks which I'm still coming to terms with. At first when we brought Maya home I didnt think I would be going but after waking by there I met a guy with another boxer a few months older and another with a pitbull same age as Maya. They reassured me it would be ok and they would help me. And they did. They gave me the confidence to go in and Maya became best friends with their dogs. I met others who I remain friends with and we even created a whatsapp group (on iPhone) to let each other know when we were going and other weekend dates. Right when Maya turned a year old I started having these issues. But their dogs were fine and they continue to go. I don't have the confidence anymore but they always try to persuade me to come as she needs to continue to socialize with other dogs.

Until we figure out the root of the problem I will continue to avoid them and just set up play dates with her fiends which is a bit hard as we live in a really urban city and our yards are pretty tiny. It's still better than nothing I guess. I miss the dog park as it was a good outlet for her energy. However I'm getting a treadmill so she can run on it (hopefully) and wear her out a bit. We're taking baby steps. I'm praying one day we'll be able to go back there. If not every day like before but at least once or twice a week.

I think there are pros and cons. Pros being the social aspect and cons being a minefield of fleas and ticks and other I predictable behaviors. Regardless I value the friendships I got out of it.
