Default Hives

Hi there all. My girl Roxy and I are new to the forum and have just relocated to the sunshine state. Yesterday evening our backyard inground sprinklers were relocated and it appears that my Roxy girl may have gotten bitten by something ;( perhaps red ants? In any case, at 4am she started acting like a lunatic. Not being able to sit still etc, and when I got up and looked at her and she was covered in hives. Thankfully her jowls were only slightly puffy. I immediately went to the local Walgreens and purchased Benadryl and gave her 50mg at 7am. Do dogs get repeated doses at 4-6hr intervals or is it only once a day? Any help is appreciated.

You should repeat the dose until the hives subside. If they don't go down she may need a stronger dose from the vet. If you notice she's having trouble breathing, take her to the vet immediately! You don't want her airways closing.

Wow, dogs tend to become extremely unsettled and 'loopy' before going into anaphylactic shock so I'm glad it's wasn't more serious! The exact same thing happened with me and my dog last year.

Keep giving the medicine but do not go over the suggested dose without first contacting your vet.
