Last year our boxer was sick....head tilted, trembling, yelping....the vet said he had an infused spine and gave steroids which helped a little but he was peeing and having diarrhea everywhere so they tried a non steroid
and pain meds. They weren’t working and he was getting worse....took a long time just for him to get up in the morning, so they advised to bring him to a specialist. The specialist said without an MRI they couldn’t know for sure what’s wrong....but that would be 3K so they said they thought it could be an infection, possible meningitis or encephalitis and tried him on an antibiotic....it worked and in a few weeks he was back to his old self. A few months ago he started trembling again and seemed in pain, he didn’t have the head tilt like he did before or trouble lifting his head. We took him back to the vet and they said it was his spine and gave him the pain meds again....this time they worked....now a few months later he is trembling and yelping again and just seems really sad....dr advised to double the meds but it isn’t working. His heart and lungs are good and he is eating fine but I feel like he is in a lot of pain. We are giving him Tramadol, Gabopentin, and Rimadyl but doesn’t seem to be helping. Could it be he has the same infection again? I wonder if we should get more antibiotics. I’m not ready to put him down yet. We thought we where going to have to last year but he got better. He will be 11 in Dec and I know that is old for a boxer but I know some that live until 12 o

That's rough. Can you get an appointment with an Oncologist? I think ultrasounds can be very helpful if done by a board-certified specialist. We kept taking x-rays to rule out any bone involvement when my dog had Lymphoma. To diagnose accurate spine problems, the specialist also had to put my dog under anesthesia.

It’s all so expensive though. My friend spent a huge amount of money on her dog who was older just to find out he was dying anyways. How long do most boxers live? I read 10 to 12 years but I met a boxer that was 13. Was on her last legs but still friendly. Our vet said they lose so many around 8 years olds. I will be devastated but I think also a bit relieved when he goes because all I do is worry about him and I physically don’t feel well now plus I’m cleaning up pee a lot....he always had accidents on and off but it’s a lot more now since he is home all day when we are at work. My husband I don’t think will deal well with putting him down though. I don’t want to but hate to watch him kind of slowly just pace around the house and lay on the floor behind the couch or bed.

Yes unfortunately our boxers end up with problems and you are lucky to have had yours for over 10 years. If you don't want or cannot spend a lot have your vet keep him comfortable until you know its his time. My friend had a siberian husky that lived to be like 15 but the dog was pretty sad at that point but she till ate and was happy to see anyone. I use to babysit their kids and we would have to help her outside to a little yard they fixed for her to do her business. Sometimes she would want right back in other times she liked to lie in the sun. She was eating, when she could eat anymore they had her PTS. It was very sad but she managed on lots of meds for at least a year longer. I am sorry your boxer is now having health problems.

Run a basic CBC panel to see if he is fighting an infection. If it’s not an infection, I would suspect pain. Sadly sometimes pain can’t be managed and decisions need to be made. Remember it’s quality of life not quantity.

Last time the infection didn’t show up in any blood test but the clindamycin antibiotic is what worked. Is it possible for him to get a recurring infection?
