Re: 2 Days of Pumpkin w/food

Did you go cold turkey or introduce the new food slowly?

It's really hard to say either way.  I tried Merrick Wilderness for a month and it never agreed with Oggie.  Switched him back to Canidae and he was fine.  It just depends on the dog really.  But too much pumpkin can have a reverse effect.  I think 1 spoonful a day is probably plenty.  Even more important is probiotics (like in yogurt) especially if the food you are giving does not have an ample supply.

Tried to introduce him to the new food slowly, but he makes a mess, seperates it, and only eats the new food.

Re: 2 Days of Pumpkin w/food

We're changing Duke VERY slowly from Royal Canin Boxer to Blue Chicken and Brown Rice (a holistic food available at Petsmart). We started with 1/4 new food for 4 days, now we're at 1/2 and 1/2 for four days.  Next, we'll do 3/4, 1/4 for four days, then finally all Blue.  So far he's doing GREAT!  He is also loving the new food, and he has his appetite back, waiting with anticipation at both breakfast and dinner.  His poop is normal, too (our vet said to keep an eye on it - fun!).  Maybe your dog's new food is too high in fat.  That's why we're changing from RC Boxer, even though it's rated highly (it's 20% fat).  Blue is rated at only 12% fat, and it's rated just as high.  I'd change to Canidae (which is 14 or 15% fat, I think), but it's not available in my town.  Good luck!!

Lol, yea Angel did that too. Picked thru her food when I was switching awhile back...Try also adding a bit of yogurt, that should help with the gas some...I've only used pumpkin a couple times and it seems to me, it was almost an immeadiate difference. Is this happening since the food switch? If so, it could just be that it's not agreeing with him

We are now on our second bag of Solid Gold Hudchen flocken puppy and his poop isn't getting any better.  Sometimes its solid, but most of the time its runny.  The pumpkin doesn't really seem to make a difference.  The gas is still out of control.  He really likes the food though and no eye boogers.

Could it be the lamb ingredient.  I think i'm going to get the wolfclub kind with the bison meat vs the lamb.

We adopted our pup about 2 weeks ago and he was on Science Diet at the MSPCA where we got him.  Don't know what he was fed before.  He's 8+ months and we've switched him to a diet of 1/2 Science Diet and 1/2 Wellness for Puppies.  Our vet thinks highly of Wellness.  He is pretty skinny with his shoulders about 24" from the ground and weighing in at 45lbs. so we've upped the amount of food he gets a day to 4 cups (2 in the morning, 2 at dinner) and he loves his food, always eats like he's starving, in fact we feed him half his meals out of kong ball to slow his eating down.  But he rarely has a real solid stool.  It is generally soft to runny and he goes at least 4 times a day. Is that normal?  Our vet says he is in great shape and we're waiting on his results from his stool.  I just worry a bit, especially with how skinny he looks (you can see almost all his ribs and sometimes his spine).  Our vet did say that since he was fixed not to long ago that his hormone levels may still be off and that can affect alot of things.
