2 female Boxers in the same house?

17532 Views 50 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Lindar51
Hi Friends, been a while since I posted. Our Gracie is now 5 years old, and I think it's time to add to our family. We are going to view a breeder tomorrow. We were set on getting another female, but I read on another site that adding a baby female to a house with an existing older female is bad. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Gracie is not aggressive or dominant. Any success stories or horror stories? Thank you in advance!

I read many horror stories. Seems once the 2nd female matures then the problems start. They will both want to be the dominant one. Even though yours is laid back now she is the dominant one as an only dog, and when the young one wants to take over the problems will start.Sometimes it works .I am on another forum and we just had a discussion I'll see if I can find some of the examples and copy & paste them here.

I found these comments....

I've read that two females are more problematic than two males or one of each. Unfortunately, I didn't read that until after we got a second Cardigan Welsh Corgi pup, a female, to go with the female we already had. The older dog was very submissive, the most biddable dog I've ever known, but when the pup matured, the two girls started fighting, and not the growling, snarling, over-in-a-minute dispute about a toy. These were bloody, tissue damaging, I-mean-to-kill-you type fights that required my husband and me each to grab a dog by the hind legs and walk them backward until we could grab a collar to keep them separated. We finally rehomed the younger dog, because we were afraid they'd maim or kill each other. The older dog was with us for 15 years and never again so much as curled a lip at another dog. That's why we have a male and a female now. I'll never have two females again. (I told this story to Blue's breeder when she asked if I'd be willing to take a female. She laughed and said, "That's why they call them bitches.")

Now this is a different breed and I should add that many also have two spayed females and all state is really comes down to temperament. If the new dog is also mellow it may work but if it doesn't you will need to always keep them separated when not supervised where you can intervene. I've had two females in my house but they were small shih tzu's and they didn't care.
Looking forward to hear how it all goes.

My personal opinion is that it will be difficult even after training to have two females get along in the same house. I don't think they know they are littler mates and by separating them for a few months they will forget each other and be friends again. We have new neighbors and they have two females, they do not get along either. They told me they bred , a few times, thinking that would help. Of course it did not and they are poorly bred non tested boxers to begin with. They now spayed and they keep them separated at all times. They use baby gates to keep one on one side of the house and alternate, same with going outside, they go out at different times. Now two neutered males usually are fine together.

Chip I think your making the right move in not bringing another dog in. Be it a female boxer or even another GSD. Honestly people today want to sue you whenever they can and taking in dogs with known issues is a lot of work for you and your household. That is to keep you and them safe and secure. I personally think and you probably don't but a nice male boxer that looks like struddell would be a better fit and now that you have trained other dogs with problems it will be a breeze. Also with the economy in the tank the costs are becoming over-bearing. Just for dog food I am spending at minimum $250. a month. Then treats, grooming (even doing it myself), vet. I could be sitting comfortably, LOL I went to Walmart the other day and was about to pick up a jug of litter, tidy cat, I was paying 9.99-11.99 it was 17. I said to myself $17. for the cat to potty in and be thrown away...I don't think so. Found a cheaper brand but if this keeps up I'll toss them out the door. (not really I just couldn't). But you can bet the shelters are going to be a lot fuller.

Yeah I get it. I always had females but switched to males. NO Costco but we have a Sam's I should check them out. I have been ordering dr. elsey's. it last longer and doesn't have a lot of dust. Ugh can't deal with dusty litter. And yes I now groom my poodles. Ever since covid prices doubled . The young one has been going to PetsMart but I will also sort doing him. I can do almost as good as they do. LOL I really don't find a whole lot of difference in training be it a male or female, just find the females more independent, both in GSD,Rotties and Poodles. The males tend to want to stay closer.
yep a male boxer is always more loving to his owner. Girls are too but the boys only have eyes for you, that what I meant when I say females re more independent. They love you but they are more into themselves, then into their owners. (kinda hard to say what I mean) . Chip I have two standard poodles, one is a rescue I took in a year ago. He is light weight compared to my first who is heavy boned. In fact when he runs or walks for that matter he is cat light, light on his feet. The other one is not and you can hear him coming, lol I still have the cairn terrier, house she is 11 now and diabetic on top of her IBS. and my one daughter, who lives home has a shih tzu. We always had those also for years. This one will turn 3 mid year. I have two cats. One is I think 12 now and the other maybe 10. The older one my daughter brought home at about 2-3 weeks old and we bottle fed and hand fed. He was supposed to go to the rescue, who as it turned out was always full. Yeah so..the other we picked up at the shelter, why I ask myself but that is a long story. Though the cats have scratching posts and have their nails periodically clipped they have totally destroyed my leather furniture and all carpet on stairway. My house is a mess and now I really need to replace the carpet and the furniture but can't because of them. One day hopefully I will be able too, if I can by then with these crazy prices on everything. Just doesn't make sense to do it now as in 6 months I will have a torn up home again. LOL Yes they are inside cats, have never been outside. My friend now has 8 cats, she had 10 lost two as they were over 20. It was her mom, (96 yrs old) overtime they find a stray and it usually has kittens they catch them they end up neutered and inside the house I think people know that is where you dump your unwanted cats. (kidding of course). They were all feral at one time.

It's on linoleum and I clean it up so he was not the one that destroyed the carpet. But Marilyn is pretty much done with cat's! So bring new cat's home would be pretty tough. :(

When they get really old that happens more frequently, My friend I told her to put a dog crate plastic thing under the litter box or to use puppy pads around it. Makes clean up a lot easier and the smell doesn't get into your carpet or flooring.
When I litter trained my kittens I used “cat attract” kitten cat litter worked beautifully they never had a mishap. My Moms senior cat started having issues she put regular cat attract in the box she too was helped so maybe you should try that. I don’t have any cats anymore while I do miss them a lot and they lived a long time I don’t miss the cat litter mess! As far as the male/female debate I don’t really have a preference I really think it’s the time and training you put into them. I’ve had some super great dogs either way.
Yep with training either male or female is great. If your going to have two, female/male or male/male (neutered). In most breeds females are more independent, (just like us women). The do cuddle but on their terms. Male dogs just like their people, want to be taken care of, and want to cuddle.. Sound familiar? LOL
