50/50 Cancer

Hello, my names Matt, and I have a 9yr old female boxer, who last month woke up with a swollen left side of her mouth/nose. It reminded me of someone with a black eye, so a puffy cheek, that caused the her eye to swell up. I called the vet, and they couldn’t get me in for a little over week. I know this’s wrong, but I thought I’d try a steroid as an anti inflammatory, along with Benadryl. I gave her the week cycle, and the swelling completely disappeared. Another mistake on my part, but I canceled my appointment.
Everything was fine for a month, and then 3 days ago, I noticed a marble size lump starting, again. 1/10 of the size it’s previous size, so I called the vet and got lucky, they had an opening from a cancellation. So we went to the vet, I told the vet her tooth wasn’t bad, he agreed, so I didn’t think it was an infection, no discharge, the lumps firm, and I snitched on myself for giving her one of those steroid cycles where you start high, and taper off.
The vet couldn’t explain why that even worked, and I was a little surprised he didn’t prescribe anymore. He has her loaded up on antibiotics, and it isn’t doing a thing. Granted it’ll be approaching 48hrs Sunday at 2pm.
I don’t know what you call it, but the vet lanced her face, no puss came out, and sent away samples for testing. It’s $250, for the test, and the vet said he’s 50/50 on it coming back as being cancer, yet he said there’s a chance they comeback inconclusive. Say what???
This really has me upset, the frustrating part, I don’t even know if it’s warranted. I’m hiding it from our son, I’ll wait until we know for sure.
Symptoms I’ve noticed, she didn’t eat her food last week, but there was no lump, and when she ignored her favorite treat, I knew something was up. That night thinking she might be sick, I made her chicken that I shredded up, and rice, something plain. She ate everything, but it took her twice as long. So my grocery store has a refrigerated section for soft dog food. Rachel Ray, or something like that, so she’s been eating that, it just takes forever, and she doesn’t like anything cold.
I’m worried the vet isn’t moving fast enough, I mean it could be cancer in her face, she’s obviously experiencing pain when she eats, and he didn’t even give me anything for pain. He gave me antibiotics, and her normal heart worm treatment, and said see ya in 2wks. I’m waiting for his call prior to the appt for the results. Maybe this’s normal timeline, I dunno, cancer scares me, and when the vet said from my experience with the breed and her age, I’m going to say it’s 50/50 of it being cancer. The lumps hard, no puss, antibiotics not working, this’s going to be a very long couple of week.

I hope if the time should come, I can separate my emotions from it all, and do what’s best for her, and not myself. I can take out a loan if need be, or put it on a card, but if I’m buying little time, and her quality of life isn’t there, I can’t. She’s already having a tough time eating, and that’s soft food. Do any of you have any food recommendations, when she was little she had severe intestinal issues, so for the first year or so, she ate rice and chix/beef/fish. So I’m fine with cooking her food, she really likes the wet meals I’m getting her now. She doesn’t like the meals cold, she’ll either let it sit and get room temperature, or if I heat it up. Hopefully all of this’s for nothing, I’ll definitely update my post. Thanks for reading my book, I’m pretty sure I sprinkled a few questions in my rant. I just needed to vent all that’s been racing through my head this wkd. I know it’s repetitive and all over the place, welcome to my head! LoL BOL

I am so sorry! There is nothing really good here. In the Medical Community ... "Boxers are known, as Cancer in a Box!" My vet, said that to me once when he was checking "Struddell, (White Boxer)," and then he blushed and said Sorry. I am sorry. And I said " No Problem," I know.

But ... "Oh well, it was DM, Degenerative mylopathy, that ultimately took her out. :(

Lot's of care 24x7 and she could not walk for 1.5 years? And my wife was pissed and asked ... "when does this end??" And I said ... "when she won't eat her favorite treat." A Jack in the Box Bacon Cheese burger and I ate the "Bacon," but Stru, never knew. But when I gave her , her once a week Cheese Burger and she did not eat it ... that is when I knew ... it was time!

It is hard to play "God." But if your the care giver for your dog ... sometimes way sooner then we like ... "That is what we have to do?" :(

I know it’s hard but don’t panic yet and yes I’ve been given the boxer cancer lecture many many times and sometimes it is. The antibiotics are very likely what’s making her nauseated and not wanting to eat Benadryl too will do that to them. Make sure if you continue the antibiotics that you give them only with meals. I heat up my dogs food for a little bit in the microwave just to take the chill off and it increases the smell so it’s more appealing I would avoid a food change right now and for me I just don’t trust that supposedly fresh food product chances are at a grocery store it’s been left out and not handled in the same fashion as human food so be very careful. I know you are very worried for your dog and rightly so but if the lump is small yet they should be able to remove it even if it is bad unfortunately as they get older this stuff does happen and you just have to address it as it comes up.

I'm not sure you can rule out any dental problems without doing x-rays of the mouth. We had extensive work done for a rescue dog at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Dental Clinic. Before diagnosing what work was needed, the dog needed to have a set of complete dental films. This required fasting so the dog would be out when they took the needed x-rays. They determined there were five teeth that needed root canals. Two had fractured roots, and needed to be removed. They prepared one of the teeth for a crown. He'd been through so much! He had been eating, but after the initial dental surgery, you could hear him really chewing his food. He'd been in so much pain before.

We had so many bumps removed that were not cancer. We got an early mast cell on one Boxer. With that one we made an appointment with a Vet Oncologist. She would keep track of bumps, and did an amazing job of aspirating them to get a definitive diagnosis. We didn't have to put the dog under anesthesia to remove, and

We recently had a rescue seen at a veterinary teaching hospital because of severe dental problems. In order to diagnose him they had to do full mouth x-rays. This was done under anesthesia. It showed he needed quite a few root canals, and extractions. I'm not sure how they could rule out any dental issues without special x-rays. They need to be able to look at the roots of the teeth. I'm attaching some information different types of lumps, and bumps I found on a vet school website. Under tumors of the oral cavity, it looks like they recommend biopsy under general anesthesia. I hope the problem is quickly, and accurately diagnosed. It's such a worry. We finally found an Oncologist who'd see us once a year to check lumps and bumps on our Boxers. She kept a chart of all of them. She was a wiz at doing an aspirate of all kinds of stuff, and she'd give a preliminary diagnosis from looking at it under a microscope. The local vet would wait until here were several lumps, and then put him under anesthesia to remove them all for biopsy. That was expensive for the surgery when they might all be benign.

I would have at least expected your vet to do dental X-rays and blood work to rule out an infection.
