We have decided that we really want to add another dog to our family. We have actually had our "feelers" out for the couple of months. Of course our first choice is a boxer. But being that we are on an island, boxers are extremely hard to come by. Even then, the going rate is $1500-3000. Unfortunately these pups are either from BYBs or a local pet store known for shipping their pets from Australia (not that there is anything wrong with the country- They have a great vacination policy- but it just seems like the amount they import it must be a puppymill). We lucked out in getting Eddie, the stars were lined in our favor for him.
We would rather adopt an older puppy or an adult dog anyway.
So we have been to local shelters, told everyone we know we are looking, reading the classifieds, etc. BTW, there is not a rescue on the island, that would have been my first choice
So, even moving past the wanting of a boxer, we haven't found the dog for our family...yet. So, out of the blue we come across a family a couple streets over looking to rehome their 10 month old boxer male (neutered). We have an almost 6 month old male (not YET neutered). My husband went over last night with our pup and had a playdate to meet the dog, even had some other friends over with their boxers, and they seemed to get along great. The new dog was very friendly to the humans and our Eddie. The new dog did not seem dominant or agressive, just very playful. Eddie is not a dominant over other dogs either in any playdates or dog park visits we have had thus far. We plan on going over tonight with the children to see the other dog again.
I have some questions though that maybe you all could help me out with. One, how well will a two male situation work? Second, apparently the other dog was neutered before he was sent to his home as puppy, meaning before 8 weeks. Would that have any affect on his health in the long run being snipped so early? Also, I guess he is HUGE. 10 months and already 70ish pounds, could that be from off-standard bloodlines or being fixed so early? I'll see the dog myself tonight, I'm going off my husbands impression from last night. I would just like to hear objective input or personal experience before we commit to giving this dog a home. BTW, if you know of a boxer in Hawaii who needs a home, send the clown our way.
Thanks in advance!
Rebecca
