We have decided that we really want to add another dog to our family. We have actually had our "feelers" out for the couple of months. Of course our first choice is a boxer. But being that we are on an island, boxers are extremely hard to come by. Even then, the going rate is $1500-3000. Unfortunately these pups are either from BYBs or a local pet store known for shipping their pets from Australia (not that there is anything wrong with the country- They have a great vacination policy- but it just seems like the amount they import it must be a puppymill).  We lucked out in getting Eddie, the stars were lined in our favor for him.
We would rather adopt an older puppy or an adult dog anyway.

So we have been to local shelters, told everyone we know we are looking, reading the classifieds, etc. BTW, there is not a rescue on the island, that would have been my first choice:) So, even moving past the wanting of a boxer, we haven't found the dog for our family...yet. So, out of the blue we come across a family a couple streets over looking to rehome their 10 month old boxer male (neutered). We have an almost 6 month old male (not YET neutered). My husband went over last night with our pup and had a playdate to meet the dog, even had some other friends over with their boxers, and they seemed to get along great. The new dog was very friendly to the humans and our Eddie. The new dog did not seem dominant or agressive, just very playful. Eddie is not a dominant over other dogs either in any playdates or dog park visits we have had thus far.  We plan on going over tonight with the children to see the other dog again.

I have some questions though that maybe you all could help me out with. One, how well will a two male situation work? Second, apparently the other dog was neutered before he was sent to his home as puppy, meaning before 8 weeks. Would that have any affect on his health in the long run being snipped so early? Also, I guess he is HUGE. 10 months and already 70ish pounds, could that be from off-standard bloodlines or being fixed so early? I'll see the dog myself tonight, I'm going off my husbands impression from last night. I would just like to hear objective input or personal experience before we commit to giving this dog a home. BTW, if you know of a boxer in Hawaii who needs a home, send the clown our way.  :D  Thanks in advance!

there are no akc breeders here on oahu..they have all been proven to be bybs BUT there IS one on the big island that has pups now..i think 2 left...

i think the one Heather is talking about either isnt here anymore or not having pups..i have heard of them through the boxer club(they spoke highly of the pups out of there)..but i know at the meet up they said that there are NO akc breeders here at all...basically warning everyone...

ALSO...that 10 month old litter...i think it may be the same litter that i have 2 friends that have dogs from that one..they are HUGE fawns?

there is a woman on pearl harbor that was rehoming her male also last week for 500..his name was LENOX cant remember how old..

there are a few looking for homes...i just cant take it on right now or i would have taken Lenox in a heartbeat hes gorgeous !!!

Lenox is the one we are getting ready to go see! They are actually here on Hickam AFB. He is really pretty and looks quite a bit like my Eddie. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW, do you know how much the Big Island pups are going for? I would be more than willing to fly over.  :D

I think it is the same litter from your friends. He is 10 months and from out in Kapolei. The current owner said he was the smallest in the litter and that Dad was 80+ pounds and mom was 70+ pounds. I believe all boys in his litter. He is a beautiful almost red colored fawn with the softest coat. He was a real sweetheart! Very excited and jumping, but obeyed the down command pretty well.

The meeting went great again. Eddie was really sad as we were leaving and kept looking back like he expected Lenox to follow us home. They shared a water bowl very nicely and even were considerate of my toddler walking around as they played. So, we are going to give it a go. We are going to bring him home on Friday so that we have the weekend to spend as a family to get adjusted to him and work out any kinks, and of course give him a chance to get to know us and his boundries. It was so great to actually have a tired puppy when we got home. Woohoo.

One thing though that the new dog will need to get used to though is walking. The current owner said she *tries* to walk him TWICE a week. I was shocked! We walk Eddie everyday, sometimes twice a day. I gotta drain that boy or he drives me nuts!!!The family seemed pleased with our family situation and very happy that Lenox will have kids AND a dog to keep him company.

I'm actually on the mailing list for the boxer club and planned on being at the April meeting, but I have two kids in baseball on seperate teams and they both have games on that same day, same time, different fields, on different ends of the base. So, the April meeting is out for me, but I REALLY want- need- to do the classes. So I hope i can get more info on that. What a small world that we are practically neighbors, I hope we can get together sometime and let the dogs romp.

Aloha!

How awesome!! I hope it works out..Sounds like Eddie was already bonding with Lennox....2 males will be fine actually..If I had to do same sex, that's the way I would go, altho there are people that have had 2 females with no issues, it's really up to the dogs in question....

Good luck and please keep us posted :)
