Yes you can register with them, but dogs are not recognized in the ring that are not AKC registered, also unable to participate in any other sanctioned events...Just like the CKC( continental Kennel club), this is basically a "knock off"..Registering with Akc gives you a lot of advantages, including their CAR ( companion animal recovery)...Here's a link to the Akc's site and reasons to register with them

AKC means nothing as far as I am concerned, it exists to make money only. They even have a high volume breeders committee that cators to puppy mills.

Does the AKC make money from puppy mills?
Yes, lots. Puppy mills comprise 80% of the AKC
