And I thought it was "high quality" dog food...

I always thought Iams was a high quality dog food until reading up on this forum. I guess it's high quality compared to other brands at wal mart....LOL Now I have to decide what kind to feed him, and we will have to switch our other dogs food (he's an 8 month old border collie) I've been reading for about an hour now on all the different kinds of food and there doesn't seem to be any 1 brand that everyone leans toward that i've noticed (if you've seen differently please let me know) I also don't know where to get the higher quality food, I know they don't sell it at wal mart and the closest pet stores to me is about 35-40 minutes away. Is there a place online that has good deals on high quality dog food??

They offer free shipping over $50 dollars. They're very good. The blue ocean seems to be popular because of all the omega 3s and 6s it contains. Very easy for boxers to digest and gives their coat a nice shine.

Keep in mind that a good quality food also is one that is good to your dog not only for your dog.  That topic has come up alot on here as well.  There are many foods that are high grade and get high marks that are really rich and certain dogs/some dogs cant eat it.  (gives them the runs).  I dont know if Border Collie's have sensitive stomachs like boxers seem to have, so you may not have that problem.  But, I can tell you I have been through several of the "good foods" and many of them gave Fiona the runs!  We settled on one that works for her with her skin and stool.

This is another good link to order food online:

Actually, Timberwolf Organics offers free shipping anywhere in the continental US (lower 48 states) on all orders over $15.00.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

I have been using taste of the wild when not feeding raw.  Its equilalent to Timberwolf, but a bit less out of pocket.   Also you can do onto any of the whole food list kibble sites and find out where they sell each based on your zip code.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

Check your local pet store and your feed store, if you have one...I live in a small rural ******* town and Walmart is the only game in town as well, but my local pet store recently started stocking both Chicken Soup (which I feed) and Nutro Ultra...Also what you can do is e-mail the company and ask for samples too..Go to the food sites you are interested and put in your zip code, it will tell you the closest location that their food is sold as well

Like was already stated, sometimes "the best" just won't work and I fed Iams for a long time, also Eukanuba & Nutro, mine did fine, but I wanted something better, if they could tolerate it..Tried Blue Buffalo, but even iron gut Samson had issues...I like to be able to go in to pick up my food,(weird quirk of mine), so I really wanted something that I could get locally, but again, if that isn't an option I would try the Timberwolf maybe, or Taste of the Wild

We get our food at Tractor Supply Co.  It's $9 less per bag for the same stuff as at PetCo.

Nutor Ultra Lamb and Rice is what we use.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

Iams used to be a pretty decent food before they were bought out by Proctor and Gamble.  I was feeding it to my greyhound before they changed and he was doing well on it.  As soon as they started carrying it in Walmart, he started getting loose stools.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

I started Odin on Royal Canin Boxer Formula 26... finally found it cheap in town. I love the idea of getting him better food... but I want something that is easy to get a hold of... was definitely excited once I found RC soo cheap!
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

I'm going to my farm store tomorrow and see what they have. I did a search and they do have Canidae so I lucked out on that!! I would rather get something locally than have to order it online.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

I have maverick switched to Canidae all life stages. i think it is the chicken and rice one but he isnt a picky eater and doesnt have a sensitive stomache for the most part so i buy whatever flavor is available if the chicken one is not. i like it because i wont have to make the switch from puppy food to adult food and it is a pretty good food as well. I think it all depends on the price (some here are outrageous prices) the availability and if your dog feels good and healthy on it.
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

If they have the all life stages that is what I was wanting to get, hopefully he will be able to eat it ok
Re: And I thought it was "high quality" dog food..

Glad you found Canidae and hope it works for your pup- its a good quality kibble. Felix had runny poo for about a month after switching to Canidae- but is firming up all the time.
