Thanks Briggs09! I have a GNC very close so I will see if they have it. I just recently learned about all the good things this stuff can do for my pups thanks to this forum. Definitely want to give it a try.

DominosLily, SUPER cute pup! I love that look on her face. :)

If you have a Vitamin Shoppe nearby, their prices tend to be cheaper than GNC's. That's where I got mine.

I'm so,glad this, got bumped!! I was just having a conversation with my aunt last night and she uses coconut oil on her bishon. My boxer seems to be getting some sort of skin irritation, so I will try this too. I am taking her to the vet on Tuesday, but hopefully it's just a skin allergy of some sort... The skin looks fine, but she's scratching and losing some fur...

Thanks for this info.... :)

I want to add one thing. Yesterday the shelter Vet where I volunteer took time uot of her day to walk one of the shelter dogs in the Christmas parade. It took a long time for the parade to start so everyone was milling about and chatting. Recently while taking one of my guys from work to the shelter as his reward for the week, right before closing some guy brought in a Boxer in terrible shape. He found her as a stray and you could tell he really was bonded with her. He really wanted to keep her but his Pit didnt get along with her. Anyways she was covered with scaley crusty some places oozing sores. I thought mange at first but I wasnt convinced. I got on the phone with Cait and she with Tulsa Boxer rescue and we got a commitment that they would take her. Anyways after my friend Shaunda the vet looked at her(I named her Aimee) she said it was a bacterial and fungal infection brought on by allergies and was very advanced because nobody did anything to ease this girls pain :( Anyways I brought down a new jar of my Coconut Oil and slathered her entire body. This poor girls ears were bleeding, almost every inch of her body was itchy and crusted. I asked the shelter staff to slather her at least once per day if they could(they have a lot of things to do and at that time were short staffed). Well Brad the kennel manager actually did do it every day bless his heart! She was on traditional meds antibiotics and meds for the fungal infection plus a special shampoo as well. There was a delay as to when TBR could pick her up. They came about a week and a half later. I was so busy with work and other personal stuff I never got back over there to see Aimee again before she left. I asked Cait to share any info on Aimee when she could. I got to see a picture when Aimee left the shelter and I was like OMGosh it was a different dog entirely! I couldnt believe it was the same dog honestly.

Sorry for the ramble about that but anyways I said to Shaunda wow those meds really worked for Aimee it was incredible. She said well even I was surprised how well it worked and how fast, but then I got thinking about the coconut oil you had Brad put on her. I'm going to get myself some of that for my friends dog. I cant seem to help her dog with traditional meds." She asked where to buy it and was really convinced the Coconut Oil played a big part in Aimees recovery.

Thats why I love Shaunda...for one she isnt hung up on her title and prefers to be called Shaunda instead of Dr, and she is open to new things that could possible help an animal even though she was only trained in traditional medicine.

Sorry for the long story but I was SO glad a Vet I knew for once believed in a non traditional form of treatment so much so that she was going to suggest and use it in her own practice :)

That is awesome Sue. I'm going to have to look for some coconut oil & start putting some on my girls food. Can it be mixed with fish oil?? Right now they get 1 fish oil pill in with their breakfast. We have a GNC but no Vitamin Shoppes near us. Wonder where else I can find it locally.

Yes it can be used along with fish oil. Do you have a Health Food store any where close to where you live? I buy mine online at Amazon.com

Don't recall a lot of Health Food stores here. I will have to surf the web. We moved here in TX coming from living within 2 hours from DC, having amusement parks 20 minutes from home, a 45 minute drive from VA Beach. Here where we live in TX, we have to drive 3 hours to either Dallas, Houston or San Antonio for amusement parks. The town we live is is good for going out to eat, staying at a hotel or buying a car. Oh well, nothing I can do about it.

Yes I understand too me a lot of getting used to living here in OK. I used to live in southern NJ everything you would ever need was tops 30 mins away. Heck if I want to go to a Petsmart now I have to drive 90 mins!

The first time I bought coconut oil for Carmen I got it from wal-mart for $10. This time I got a 16 fl oz jar for $5.99 from Trader Joe's. she had this open sore on her shoulder for about a month that just would not heal. My husband did some research on the Internet and determined it was allergy related. As soon as we started giving her the coconut heal the sore began to heal. She absolutely loves the taste. I think we'll keep her on it for a while. She was getting salmon oil before, but we stopped giving it to her for about a month. Now we'll probably alternate between salmon oil and coconut oil for her allergies. She does well on them both.

I'm so glad it seems to be helping her. The trouble is there are different types of coconut oil and I personally don't buy the brand at Walmart simply because it isnt good enough quality. If you read this thread you will see why

I read all the posts about coconut oil last night and decided to give a little bit on my finger to my 13 week old pup this morning....she went nuts for it! Just so that I am correct, 1tsp per 10lbs? Also, is this beneficial to give to my lab too or it this just good for boxers?

I'm weird when I try new things with him. I started out with only 1/4 tsp for the first week then 1/2 tsp week two and so on. He only gets 2 tsp a day but his skin is silky, shiny, smooth. Everyone compliments him on his coat. Partly bc of coconut oil and partly bc of his raw diet:)
