Hi, I've been getting a lot of questions as to if my boxer Dempsey might be a mix with some type of bulldog. The seller told me that he was a pure breed but as he started getting older (just turned 8mo. Yesterday) I started noticing that he wasn't turning out to be like a purebred Boxer would look like. His body is small, and wide, and his legs aren't As long as a pure boxer. Just like to know your opinion. Thank you.

He does seem to have shorter legs but I'm no boxer expert.

This was Zuke at 6 months. I thought he was part giraffe.

Looks all boxer to me... perhaps poorly bred with something mixed in down the lineage. Who knows.. you could try a DNA test to see..

Any who he is pretty darn cute!

He looks like a short, stocky boxer :)

Some are tall and lanky, others are shorter.

Thanks everyone, a lot of good feedback. Yea he's pretty short and ocky.. wondering if he'll get taller and bigger he's at 8 months right now.. about 2 months ago we weighed him at 53 pounds.. not sure how much he is at right now, I'd say 60 close to 70.

Super cute boxer pup. Not sure about purebred or not. My first experience is with Max, a rescue.

Didn’t even know what a boxer was until we got him. But he sometimes looks like a mix—doesn’t have the long boxer neck, more stocky, plus he is shorter legged. Has a deep chest and boxer face tho.

Can’t give an opinion as I just now started with my first ever boxer. I can say I’ve used Embark DNA testing three times and been thrilled with results all three times. I use the one that tests for 170+ potential issues, but there are cheaper that do breed testing only. The breed part of report shows back three generations (parents, grandparents, great grandparents) and both maternal and paternal sides. For example Blaze was 100% Staffordshire at great grandparents, at grandparents, 100% Staffordshire Terrier sire mated with Staffordshire/Rottweiler mix, then at parents, 100% Staffordshire Terrier Sire mated with “mixed” female. Full results below.

While I enjoy knowing the specific breeding, after the first one I bought and saw the depth of the medical testing, I do it mainly for that. It’s great knowing your dog is clear of many hereditary medical issues. The specific breeding helps with training as well.

If you look around, you can find below MSRP pricing on the Embark kits. Easy to use as well.
Eliminates a lot of “guessing” and sometimes not so accurate “expert” opinions.

My dogs (per Embark):

Zee - 50% Staffordshire Terrier, 18.7% Labrador Retriever, 13.9% American Bulldog, 17.4% Supermutt (Australian Cattle Dog, Cocker Spaniel, Rottweiler). Shelter called him a “Lab Mix”.

Blaze - 56.4% Staffordshire Terrier, 15.6% Siberian Husky, 12.3% Rottweiler, 5.4% Golden Retriever, 5.3% GSD, 5.0% Great Pyrenees. Shelter called him a “her”, and a “Pit Mix”.

Thor - 100% Boxer. Not a shelter dog, adopted from my daughter.

I'm on my second boxer and they have both been pretty long and lean at/around 8 months. Duke is just shy of 8 months now and weighs in at just over 50lbs...he's a lot of legs, but I expect him to keep growing and fill out in the next year or so and be around 65-70lbs. The only real way to answer your question is to run a DNA test on the dog. Either way, just enjoy!
