I want to give my dogs a dog food that has the gluclosamine and chond. in it. My Giant schnauzer has had 2 knee surgeries for torn ACL. They are all on Solid Gold MMillennia but it doesn't  have that in it. I am a little worried about switching My pitbull to Canidae also because of his allergies. Would the Platnium be ok for my dogs? They are 3-5 years old(thats their age ranges) it only has 18% protien though. SHould I just find a good supplement?

I don't know of any food... You should try joint supplements... They have it in them...

And I was just curious... I think my bf's pitbull tore his CCL (ACL) ... its tender to the touch between the two knee bone things, right? His quacky mother insists its hip displaysia but it only hurts to touch his knee .. not his hip... Then she says he wont need surgery for hip displaysia be/c all that have to do is "pop it back in" every month or so... :roll:  thank god she'll never own another dog... not as long as i'm with her son anyway..

He could of injured his acl. When Libby was about 4 months old she tore hers the first time running around like a loon. At first I thought she was having hip problems because she never yelped when she first hurt herself, but they x-rayed her hips and said her hips were excellent but that she needed surgery for her ACL. We had to keep her "quiet" for 8 weeks. She couldn't do anything, she had to be on a leash to go potty and my hubby built her a ramp because she couldn't use stairs. Still with keeping her quiet at her 8 week check up we were told the surgery failed so they did it  again that time I told them to put a cast on her leg. She will still limp ecspecialy after she plays. The vet did say that we will need to get a TPLO done soon on her which is VERY VERY expensive. I would take him to the vet to have it checked it could be that or something minor, but if it is the acl or ccl if its left untreated he will get arthritis. Pop back in the hip thats kinda funny, my mom says things that make me wonder also.

I don't think the amount of glucosamine and chondroitin in the foods is enough to even make a difference. It's also hard to gauge how much they are actually getting in each meal. I would feel better getting a supplement. That way you know and can control the amount of supplements they are getting. My last boxer had knee and hip dysplasia, and it was controlled very well with the use of supplements.  :wink:

I would just look at the amount of Glucosamine and chondroitin in the product. I always gave 1000 mg a day to Buster. I am about to start Maddie on it, but will probably just give her 500 mg a day, just because she doesn't have any joint issues yet, and would like to keep it that way!  I really like the Synovi or the Glyco Flex brands. I don't know too much on the missing link. I guess you can just compare ingredients in a couple of products. I just had really great results using these two, and believe me I've tried a bunch of them.

I order them from Drs. Fosters and Smith all the time, never had a problem and they are a lot cheaper than getting it from my vet.

Gyco Flex is awesome! But just for the sake of keeping Toby's hips and joints healthy, I have him on Solid Gold Missing Link.. I add it to his food a few times week and we exercise daily...
