My Schatzi has a CCL tear and a torn meniscus on her right leg.

We went from her regular vet to a specialist. She's had xrays and tests. The injury happened about 6 weeks ago. We have had her on coprofen and kept her on limited activity until we could get her to the specialist yesterday. The medication helps somewhat as she will occasionally bear weight on her leg.

The specialist is recommending surgery. I just can't decide which surgery would be better for her. They offered us the traditional surgery which is less expensive or TPLO surgery. I feel the TPLO might work better, but it seems a bit more risky to me. AND it is a good bit more expensive. She isn't super active now that she is getting a bit older so I am leaning toward the traditional treatment. I just want her out of pain and at least able to play and go for walks. I also don't want to end up doing the one surgery and having to go back and do the other anyway. I hate to say it too, but the cost is an issue for us. The TPLO is $500 more than the traditional surgery.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel like if she was younger I would go right for the TPLO. But she is older and with the possible complications with TPLO that traditional would be better. Uggg I Just don't know.

Well I did a lot of research. And while the potential complications of the TPLO kind of scare me, I think it will provide the best outcome for Schatzi. Her surgery is scheduled for Monday. Wish us luck and say a little prayer for her if you would. I hate that my baby girl has to go through this :-(

I was just researching this today. Duke has been limping since this past weekend on and off. He seemed to be getting better, but I'm doing my research just in case.

I've also found most vets online recommend TPLO surgery.

Good luck and I'll be praying for Schatzi!

How’s Schatzi doing, my Louie has the same issues as well
What was the vet advised to you? My Buster has the same issue as well he's been limping for quite a while now. I also noticed that his right leg is larger than his left leg. He's not an active dog, I kept on trying to walk him but he only likes to sleep and eat. I brought him to the vet and they examined him. The result of the MRI shows that he has a slight ACL tear on his left knee. They recommended me to go for TPLO procedure here: TPLO Surgery in Austin, TX | TPLO Austin

But I am kinda scared. Should I go for a surgery or wait to heal on its own? :(

If it’s a slight tear it can heal with proper care it will take at least 6 months for it to heal and physical therapy my dog had laser and shockwave treatments and pain anti inflamatory meds too. No crazy running around fast stop starts gentle leash walking. It’s up to you if you want surgery it will be a faster resolution to your dogs lameness either way you are going to be making a commitment of time and money.
