Crusty scabs EVERYWHERE

2903 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  blondie4761
I am desperate.
Reese developed one quarter size sore in April. We “treated” it with two round of antibiotics. In the meantime, she had a scrape and culture. It came back that she may (not affirmed) be allergic to the antibiotic we were pumping into her for two months. She started a round of prednisone, which was rough on her little body. But these scans and sores WILL NOT GO AWAY. They will not heal. I’m beside myself. We’ve tried medicated shampoo (starts with an M). I’ve tried ointments of all kinds. They are not itchy. Has anyone seen this before???

Long ago there was someone on this forum whose dog had similar sores & bumps. If I remember correctly they had gone to the beach and when washing the dog rubbed the toweling the opposite direction as the fur and I think it had some sort of mites. They had to go to a dermatologist. There are many older threads you can search. I'd be inclined to take her to a dermatologist.

Those little scabs look like the remnants of hives she had from whatever she was allergic too and like Lindar51 said when you bath them you do have to watch not to towel them off against the direction of the hair and don't rub hard. But I was wondering does she have seasonal or other wise allergies? Has she had a Lepto vaccine recently? All of those things can cause hives my dog reacted to moldy leaves too. I use a Cytopoint injection for my dogs outdoor allergies and it works very well with no side effects. A dermatologist would be helpful here I think if you have one in your area

Thank you. I think a dermatologist will be out next stop.

Thank you. She has had allergies in the past. Usually in April, when all the trees are blooming, she starts itching like crazy and we put her on Apoquel. No recent vaccines. The current skin condition doesn’t seem to be itchy. It’s very odd - little crusty things develop, the hair then falls off, and you see what remains. But she has no idea it’s even there.
A dermatologist would be my next step. This could be so many things. Allergies, Mites, staph infection etc.
Hoping you get some answers soon.
Hmm well that is certainly strange looking? But I would try this. :

It works with "Road Rash," and it works with my doggy's to ... kinda pricy but it could not hurt. :)

Did you try giving Benadryl at all to see if it makes any difference? A few months ago my dog woke up in the middle of the night, and as running around the house frantically!! Later she developed hives all over her body. We gave her benadryl per the ER. The dermatologist said it was an anaphylactic full-brown reactio to a spider, or other bug bite.

Did you find an answer? I have a white boxer with this exact issue has been going on for months waiting on dermatology appointment now. Vet has done skin scrapes, treated with antibiotics, steroids, medicated shampoo, anti-fugal, and allergy meds all to no avail and it’s getting worse.
