Just curious here... sometimes Odin gets REALLY worked up and runs around the house or yard like crazy... I've noticed on two seperate occasions, after running full-tilt, he'll slow-down and limps like one leg/hip is broken or severely injured... it worries me really bad, then just when I think my dog is crippled for life, he walks it off as-if nothing at all happened or was wrong... problem solved (if ever there was one).

Has anyone seen/experienced this?

What's up with that?

How quickly does it go away? What you can do is run your hand down his leg, just putting some pressure on it, like a massage and see how Odin reacts...He could very well just tweak a muscle, or maybe stepped on something...Samson has done that before and with his age, I always get alarmed when something happens..After checking out his leg thoroughly and his paw, not finding anything, he jumped off the couch and was fine..In his case I think he just wanted some extra attention,,Big ham..Lol..

But if it starts happening to Odin requently, it wouldn't hurt to have the vet take a look at him..Never can be too careful...

It could be a strain/sprain that he's re-injuring when he's running around.  I see also that he's on calcium supplements - sometimes these can lead to growth-related bone/joint pain like panosteitis, OCD, or HOD, so keep an eye on things; if he starts limping/acting sore that's not associated with exercise, or if the lameness shifts from leg to leg (or if he becomes feverish, lethargic, and lacks appetite), suspect one of these.

My last boxer was diagnosed with hip and knee displaysia at 9 months. What you are describing is why I brought him to the vet and had him checked. He would burn around the yard and then limp on his hind leg for a day or two, then act totally normal again. He would even limp if we went on walks. It is not normal for them to be limping after they play. Accidents do happen, or maybe Odin stepped on a thorn or something. If you notice he does it quite often after he plays, I would take him in and have some X-rays done. How old is Odin now? Does he ever wake up and start walking a little stiff, or do his joints pop? I don't mean to scare you in any way, but I think it is better to know what is going on early than wait, and if there is something wrong, than you can begin to treat or manage the condition. Buster's knee and hip displaysia was very well managed with supplements, and thank heavens he never needed surgery.

My boyfriend's pitbull, Sid, (in his 3 years of life) has only been allowed to run off leash three time (without being fenced in) and since he's so lazy and never gets walked he will limp after some hard running and play. If you touch it, he goes into the "Please baby me" mode.. My bulldog on the other hand can go for hours and still want to keep going...

Not the same situation... but when jessie was about 10 weeks old, she leaped off the couch and did not land so well.  She was limping for about 5 minutes... i was freaking out, i was all ready to take her to the hospital and she started running around the playing and was fine...

He's not stepping on anything or falling any distance.  I've noticed it happen twice in about as many weeks... once in the backyard, once in the front yard (ending in the house... front door was open).

Our front and back yard are both flat as a board... no slopes or hills... soft green grass... no thorns or weeds or rocks.  In both cases, he came to a sudden stop, and held up one rear leg as-if it were severely injured/broken and limp a bit... I honestly can't remember if it was the same rear leg on both occasions or opposite legs.  In both cases, I saw him limp from beggining to end... in both cases, the length of the limp only lasted maybe 30 seconds or so... not long at all, but long-enough to go "OMG, what's wrong", then he'd shake it off and walk-off like nothing happened... not sure what to make of it.

As for the Calcium tabs, I'm pretty sure they are NOT to blame... he's been on them a total of 3 or 4 days, and the first instance was before he was taking them.

Maybe it was a charley horse... do dogs get those?

If it were me(only because i have been throught it) I would take him to be seen. It does sound like a Luxating patella. It can easily slip in and out of place. If its a grade one usually they will only keep an eye on it and have you give him a joint supplement.

Could it have been the fact that he stopped so suddenly that hurt his leg in the first place?  It happened to me a few times when I used to play football (soccer) - when you're running fult tilt and you stop or change direction suddenly it can cause a very painful muscle strain.
