I'm thinking there is a timeframe for this.  If so, what is it?  Sadie's been having alot of problems with her ears, and I've read alot of the pros and cons, but I wondering if it's still an option since she'll be 1 this month.  Her darn ears are huge (aka Dumbo).  Personally, I don't think her big ears are helping with the yeast problems we're having.  The first thing the vet suggested minus the medicine was to flip her ears back to allow some airflow.

Sorry to hear you're having ear issues. The cut off is 12 wks... though some do 16 wks... VERY RARE. 8 to 12 wks is when you get it done. I think it kind of stinks cuz' it truly doesn't give you much time to decide if you're just completely up in the air about it.

Yeah - the reason for doing it between 8-12 wks. is b/c this is the time as to when the ear "leather" is pliable enough to be able to be "molded" ... if you do it later than 12 wks. you risk not having the ears ever stand since the cartilage has already stiffened.

(I think ;)))

I believe the time frame is no later than 12-16 weeks (depends on the vet) after that the ear cartiledge is not right for cropping.

Ashley was 14 weeks to the day when she had her crop. I worked with a Vet here who checks the ears 2 times a week for cartalidge formation, and you need to be ready almost at the drop of a hat to get your dog in. It worked very well for us, as we have minor edge taping right now , only at bedtime, and she is 3 weeks post crop with full stance since week 2.
This vet will not do cropping beyond 16 weeks, as everyone has stated above, beyong that point the leather sets into a specific shape, and it may never go into stance for you.
So sorry to hear your baby has the yeast issue, I know how awfull it stinks!! There is a product you may wish to ask the vet about though, I think its called Ear-dry..that helps the moisture problems.
I totaly agree the window you have to work with on crops barely gives you enough time to get to know your baby, much less make a decision like this! Best of luck!!

Thanks for the info.  I was 99% sure it was a procedure that had to be done at 16 weeks or earlier.  I hadn't wanted her ears cropped, the only reason I figured I would ask is because she's been having alot of problems with her ears.  We've been flippin em back in the evenings when we're at home to let em air out!  I didn't even ask/talk with our vets about cropping her ears, when Charlie was a pup I asked the vet, and they don't even do croppings so I would have had to go to another person for that.

Our only boxer who had ear issues was Bessy who had her ears cropped.
Some dogs have problems with this and even cropping would not resolve the problem.
There are some things you can do for the prophylaxis. The others here will know
the names of the american ear-medicines

Generally ear cropping is done between 9-12 weeks of age. I actually just got my puppy's ears cropped almost 2 weeks ago. He was 11 weeks old than. He still has the cup on his head, which will be removed this Saturday. It also depends on the vet b/c mine I believe if it was past 12 weeks she would do it as long as he did not weigh more than either 22 or 25 lbs.

Tyson was at the vet saturday morning with ear issues.  He has a yeast infection in the ear. And is now on medication with 2 different kind of ear solutions.  Do you know how hard it is to get a boxer to lay down, stay, while we clean out his ears & massage the solution in?!?!? Wow.  The vet said he had a very bad infection.

I know how hard  it is.  I hope Sadie gets better soon.
