It is a microscopic mite that is picked up from the ground or another animal with earmites. It is treated by treating the ears with medicine designed to kill ear mites, which your vet could/should have gave you. It is only dangerous if left un treated because the dog will scratch its ears and can cause and infection in the ear.
I just had Jake in for his first vet appointment and he also had earmites.The vet cleaned his ears out with a baby wipe and then put some drops in his ears.He also started him on a flea medicine that kills earmites as well.
