It is just about the same as with human blood donation... The blood is species specific, so dogs can receive only dog blood and cats can receive only cat blood.

Dogs and cats have blood types just as humans...... Cats have A, B, and AB. Dogs have eleven different blood groups.  Dogs that are A negative (which Fiona is) are considered universal donors.

One of our evet offices here will actually trim your dogs nails and have free blood transfusions as well as some other stuff for dogs that donate.  It's really cool that Fiona has helped out.

I didn't even know that was possible either.  I can tell you I donate some, I'm A- which is pretty rare in humans.  I think 6 or 7 outta 100.

I didn't know that you could donate ahead of time.  I know that when my last dog had surgery the vet brought in his dog in case Rascal needed a transfusion.

I've been called a dog a time or two.  Does that mean I can donate?  I'm afraid of needles, though, so you would have to knock me out first.
