I think Gaby is strating to come into season, I've noticed that her vulva seems to be swollen and she seems to lick more often and has a decressed appetite....So other then the obvious precautions like not letting her out of my site while outside and keeping her on leash at all times from other topics I have red on here, should I totally avoid walks on the beach or were there may be unfixed males around?...would there be a chance to intercept if a male should happen to come around us?...I will be getting her spayed after this first heat, and I definitely do NOT want any accidents to happen...

i honeslty would not take her on leash walks in public areas. I believe youre responsible but that doesnt mean someone else walking there unaltered male is as responsible and if they cant control their male or he is just a stray that runs up gabby in heat would i think be willing to go...lol. just not worth the risk of puppies. i would only do a private fenced yard.

IMO taking her out in public even on leash is a risk! Ive been around males when females have been in heat and quite frankly they will do ANYTHING To get to them! I wouldnt take her to the beach! Yeah they make doggie diapers lol but I always found it cheaper to get boys undies and put em on backwards so their nub can go through the hole lol Then just put a maxi pad in there. Im sure someone else will have more info.

I definately would keep her home till this passes. One of the things I noticed about my female when she went into her cycle, was..she literaly became a real Bitch!! I almost would venture to tell you that if an un-neutered male came around..if it were my first female..she would have tried to rip his throat out.
I kept her in the house, went outside with her everytime..and she didn't get to go for walks for almost 16 days...( oddly enough, I was told, every females fertile period is different..some are ovulating almost from day one of the true bleeding..some much later in the cycle ) So I would rather you be safe then sorry!!
The boys undies things help alot to keep the house clean, and so does either a bit more crate time, or keeipng some blankets on the floor or furniture that you don't care about. Trust me..by the time she is done you WILL be sick to death of the constant licking..poor babies..they are trying their best to stay clean, but Ohh can that sound get on your nerves!!

I would say keep her away from public places just to be on the safe side.
When Phoenix went into heat we bought boys boxers and lined it with a maxi pad.

Definitely avoid any public places...You know that old saying "where there's a will, there's a way"..It's true when there is a bitch in season around....What Cindi suggested with the boys pants, that would be good..What you can also do, is sometimes they do have a strong smell, use some unscented wipes to help keep her clean back there...To be on the safe side, figure close to a month before she's clear...they say 3 weeks or more, so I always err on the side of caution :)

thanks for the advice.....I guess were just gonna stick to car rides instead of walks for a while....The treadmill will definitely come in handy now, this way she can still get some sort of exercise....we dont have a fenced in yard, so I guess this means no more boxer burns around the yard for a while.....we live on a pretty secluded country road with less then 10 houses on it, but the nearest neighbour is less than 1/4mile away. They do have a GSD but I have no idea if it has been fixed.

I defintely wouldn't take her out.

Our girl Freya was going into heat when we got her. I have been around dogs all my life but they have always been spayed (or neutered).

We took our children to a local park one day and took Freya with us. There is also fenced in dog park there. We had barely got out of the car, which we had parked in the parking lot near the dog park, when I heard very loud yelling. An intact male was scaling over the six foot chain link fence surrounding the dog park  . He came over it like it was nothing and was on top of Freya in an instant. Thankfully, she was not interested!

We turned around quickly, trying to get back to the car. My husband was shepherding three kids and I was dragging an unhappy Freya with a very interested Weimaraner close behind.

The dog's owner finally got out of the dog park and got her dog on a leash. He ended up pulling her off her feet and dragging her behind him  . I did not think it was funny at the time though I laugh about it now. I was sooo embarrassed  ! I bet the Weimaraner's owner still doesn't find it funny all these years later  .

Needless to say we didn't take her out of the house until she went out of season. Then she had false pregnancy which lasted weeks and she was just a mess. Carrying stuffed toys around and whining all the time. What a nightmare! We had her spayed as soon as we could and I hope I never have to deal with another female in heat in my life.

It was a very unpleasant experience altogether  .
