My vet okay'd me on trying tagamet and benadryl. (my poor baby has 3 masses, two of which she has acquired in the past 5 days!) She said it was worth a shot.

has anyone tried this? Does it work? I've searched the internet for acutal picture proof and haven't found too much. I'm just curious!

I have read that it works on mast cell tumors, but don't have any personal experience with it.

I hope it works for your baby Sophie, is that the kind of tumor she has?

The vet believes that the one on her leg and the new one on her vulva are mast cell. She has what appears to be a fatty tumor on her chest that the vet said the tagamet probably wont help that one but it wont hurt it either.

BTW thats exactly what I thought about the one on her leg, mast cell, it looks typical. But of course I am by no means a expert.

Gracie has a lesion on her right back foot. It has been there for at least 5 months. It hasn't grown or changed shape and I am apprehensive about having it cut out as I don't want to release any histamines into her system.

I am going to start her on this treatment today and chart her progress.

I am actually acquainted with Diane, mom of Hans the miracle Boxer boy, who is featured on Vera's page. He is a walking testament! We were all so very excited when his test came back and showed all the tumours disappeared!! Wow!

Thanks for sharing this, Sue!

That would be great to document her progress with pictures etc and I dont blame you for not wanting surgery. Please keep us updated regularly I would be very interested.

So I am told and from what I have read with mast cell tumors its very important to be able to take a good portion of the healthy tissue around the tumor to make sure the margins are clean. Sometimes this is difficult because its hard to tell where the tumor tissue ends and healthy tissue begins.

It's confirmed. Sophie has Mast Cell Tumors. I have yet to see significant results with the tagamet and benadryl.

We are a military family and are unable to provide Sophie with surgery, due to financial issues. It's so sad.

How many days have you been doing the Tagamet and Benadryl? I would give it more time. Im sorry you cant afford the surgery, thats really tough I'm sure. The only other option I know of besides the T&B that doesnt involve surgery chemo or rediation is herbs and supplements. Keep us posted

As I understand from one of our boy having a mast cell removed a couple of months ago, it's the histamines that help them to grow. It makes sense they'd use the antihistamines to help slow or stop them. I wish you luck!!

I googled this....

Our vet prescribed Prednisone and we also used Benadryl for our boys mast cell. Ultimately we had to do chemo as well, but the Benadryl keeps the histamines from flaring up in the body.

We used Benedryl for our 8 year old boxers Mast cell tumor on his back leg the size of a golf ball. The vet suggested it to keep Mason comfy as we chose against surgery, to remove his leg, believing it would crush and figuratively kill him anyway. So we we’re told he had 6-8 weeks to live. After giving him Benedryl for about 8 months, and he was always sleepy, we stopped it so he could “live till he dies” instead of sleeping all of the time. Well, he woke up and began playing like he was a puppy again and never had any sign or symptom of decline. Till one day, 3 years later, at age 11- he was playing and running and jumping with his younger dog brother and suddenly stopped, had a seizure and died. We were so blessed to have those bonus 3 years! ❤💔❤
